Description :

"Honduras is violent." Adrienne Pine situates this oft-repeated claim at the center of her vivid and nuanced chronicle of Honduran subjectivity. Through an examination of three major subject areas—violence, alcohol, and the export-processing (maquiladora) industry—Pine explores the daily relationships and routines of urban Hondurans. She views their lives in the context of the vast economic footprint on and ideological domination of the region by the United States, powerfully elucidating the extent of Honduras's dependence. She provides a historically situated ethnographic analysis of this fraught relationship and the effect it has had on Hondurans' understanding of who they are. The result is a rich and visceral portrait of a culture buffeted by the forces of globalization and inequality.

Description :

When it began, modern Spanish cinema was under strict censorship, forced to conform to the ideological demands of the Nationalist regime. In 1950, the New Spanish Cinema was born as a protest over General Francisco Franco's policies: a new series of directors and films began to move away from the conformist line to offer a bold brand of Spanish realism. In the 1950s and early 1960s, filmmakers such as Juan Antonio Bardem, Luis García Berlanga, and Luis Buñuel expressed a liberal image of Spain to the world in such films as Muerte de un ciclista (Death of a Cyclist), Bienvenido Señor Marshall (Welcome Mr. Marshall), and Viridiana. The emergence of new directors continued into the sixties and seventies with Carlos Saura, José Luis Borau, Víctor Erice, and others. After Franco's death in 1975, censorship was abolished and films openly explored such formerly taboo subjects as sexuality, drugs, the church, the army, and the Civil War. The Spanish cinema was no longer escapist and entertaining but, at long last, mirrored the society it depicted. While established directors like Saura, Bardem, and Berlanga continued to produce distinguished work, the "new wave" of Spanish cinema included brilliant films by the likes of Montxo Armendáriz (Tasio), Fernando Trueba (First Work), Imanol Uribe (The Death of Mikel), and Pedro Almodóvar (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown). In the last couple of decades, exciting works by established filmmakers and newcomers alike continue to be produced, including Alejandro Amenábar's Thesis, José Luis Garcí's The Grandfather, and Almodóvar's Talk to Her and Volver. In Great Spanish Films Since 1950, Ronald Schwartz presents a compendium of outstanding Spanish films from the pre-Francoist era through the Spanish New Wave of the 80's and 90's and into the present day. Schwartz provides background, plot, and commentaries of key films from six decades of Spanish cinema. In addition to identifying

Spanish is Awesome! After English, Spanish is undoubtedly the most popular language for foreign language learners worldwide. In addition, the rich library of literature available in the Spanish language makes it a huge source of great content for native Spanish speakers and Spanish learners alike. Learning the language of Spain is a great idea for anyone at all, at any stage of life. This book provides the ultimate vocabulary and intelligence challenge for all learners of Spanish and Spanish enthusiasts worldwide. There are many apps and games that help us learn languages in a fun and exciting way. From the gamification inherent in apps like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone, to more traditional approaches in brick and mortar language classes, language learning has always seen a variety of pedagogical approaches. This book offers an interesting - and successful - new take on the age-old problem of building up one's vocabulary in a new language quickly and at minimal cost.Learning Spanish has many aspects: it is important to learn basic grammar and sentence structure. It is also very important to have a large bank of words to draw from, so that you can understand all the important parts of a conversation, and also so that you can read a book or watch a movie and follow most of what's going on without needing to use a dictionary or rely too heavily on the subtitles.Within this book, you will learn hundreds of new Spanish words through the medium of multiple fun and engaging word game formats. The book can be read in two ways: it can either be approached as a serious puzzle book by people who are 3-12 months into a Spanish course, and are looking to take their vocabulary size to the next level, in a way that is more interesting and entertaining than the tried and tested method of going through a dictionary and memorizing word after word.It can also be used by people who are just starting off on their Spanish journey. I have provided the meanings, in English, of every Spanish word featured in this book; this will help any reader go through the answers and learn the words, before going back to the questions after a while, and trying to guess those words in a different order. All the very best!

This resonant and award-winning picture book tells the story of one girl who constantly gets asked a simple question that doesn’t have a simple answer. A great conversation starter in the home or classroom—a book to share, in the spirit of I Am Enough by Grace Byers and Keturah A. Bobo. When a girl is asked where she’s from—where she’s really from—none of her answers seems to be the right one. Unsure about how to reply, she turns to her loving abuelo for help. He doesn’t give her the response she expects. She gets an even better one. Where am I from? You’re from hurricanes and dark storms, and a tiny singing frog that calls the island people home when the sun goes to sleep.... With themes of self-acceptance, identity, and home, this powerful, lyrical picture book will resonate with readers young and old, from all backgrounds and of all colors—especially anyone who ever felt that they don’t belong. 2019 Nerdies Fiction Picture Book Award Winner | Silver Medalist for Bank Street College of Education’s Best Spanish Language Picture Books of the Year | Named one of Kirkus Reviews Best Books of 2019 |A Mighty Girl’s 2019 Book of the Year | Named one of New York Public Library's Best Books for Kids 2019 "Lyrical language and luminous illustrations.
