'A man would stab you in the chest, a woman would stab you in the back.' Karen Moline, Belladonna The truth about female competition! Have you coveted, envied, admired another woman's hair, shoes, bag, job, husband, figure or weight this morning? Have you ever breathed a sigh of relief when your ex's new girlfriend turns out to be fatter, uglier or poorer than you? Thought Anything She Can Do I Can Do Better? Chances are, if you're a woman who engages in society (read, leaves the house), you're competitive - not that you'll admit it. Female competition is a taboo topic. It's covert, rarely spoken about in public, but it exists. We owe it to the future generations of women to encourage the way we compete with each other to be a positive experience in the game of life. This means acknowledging our competitive thoughts, not judging them. Speaking openly, looking at what triggers our own competitiveness, discovering why we compete in some situations and not in others and then working with what we know. Rachael Oakes-Ash interviewed prominent women – including formidable US gossip columnist Liz Smith, Anita Roddick, Julie Burchill, Senator Natasha Stott Despoja, Nancy Friday, Cynthia Heimel, Tara Moss, Wendy McCarthy, Ann Sherry, Maggie Alderson, Fiona Horne, Deborah Lee Furness and Miss Australia – and in her inimitable style, shares their and her own experiences and theories on female competition.

Marie Marchetti has what appears to be the perfect life: she's beautiful, smart, successful—and recently married to medical equipment salesman Richard, her equal in many aspects. But the idea of creating a perfect family halts abruptly shortly after their wedding. Mistrustful of her husband's late night phone calls, cryptic receipts hidden in the basement, and the gun in his desk drawer, Marie's suspicions of something amiss are confirmed when she inadvertently interrupts a meeting between Richard and his so-called business associates in their living room. Enraged, he causes her to fall down the basement steps, compelling Marie to run for her life. Ending up in Atchison, Kansas, Marie sets up a new life for herself as she meets Karen Franklin, a woman who would become her lifelong best friend, and rents a coach house apartment behind a three-story Victorian home. But her attempts at a new life are fraught with the fear that Richard will show up at any time—and who knows what he'll do? Ironically, it is the discovery of the identity of her real father and his ethnicity that unexpectedly changes her life forever.Forcing her protagonist to let go of old conventions to forge new, healthier ones, Osmund tears open layers of confusion, anger, fear, and shame that are universal to the human experience of catharsis and growth. With extraordinary insight into our most basic need for trust and connection, The Coach House expertly builds tension as it tears open our primal instincts for survival and community.

ACIM, the Fun Version! A real-world rewrite of the lessons of A Course in Miracles by the #1 New York Times best-selling author of E-Squared. A Course in Miracles is profound, deeply moving, and as boring to read as a bookshelf assembly manual. Ask for a show of hands at any self-help gathering, and 95 percent will happily admit to owning the dense blue book that's a famous resource for spiritual transformation. Ask the obvious follow-up, "How many have actually read it?" and all but a smattering of hands go down. It's as if everyone wants the miracles, the forgiveness, and the mind shifts, but they just can't bear its ponderous heaviness. Pam Grout to the rescue! Her new book is for all those still struggling with the Course. Grout offers a modern-day rewrite of the 365-lesson workbook-the text at the heart of the Course. Unlike the original, it's user-friendly, accessible and easy for everyone to understand. In daily lessons with titles like "The Home Depot of Spiritual Practices" and "Transcending the Chatty Asshat in My Head," Grout drills down to the Course's essential message and meaning, grounding it in the context of everyday life in a way that's bound to stick. The lessons here blend eternal truths with pop culture and personal stories that are laugh-out-loud funny and deeply soul-stirring, often at the same time. You won't be tempted to use this Course in Miracles as a doorstop. You'll want to use it, every day, to change your life.

ISBN 13 : 0191544833
Description :

Akkadian is one of the earliest attested languages and the oldest recorded Semitic language. It exists in written record between 2500BC and 500BC, much of it in letters and reports concerned with domestic and business matters, and written in colloquial language. It provides a unique and valuable source for the study of linguistic change but which, perhaps because of the impenetrability of its writing system, has rarely been exploited by linguists. In this book, Guy Deutscher examines the historical development of subordinate structures in Akkadian. A case study comprises the first two parts of the book, presenting an historical grammar of sentential complementation. Part I traces the emergence of new structures and describes how the finite complements first emerged in Babylonian. It also explains the grammaticalization of the quotative construction. Part II is a functional history which examines the changes in the functional roles of different structures. It shows how, during the history of the language, finite complements and embedded questions became more widespread, whereas other structures (e.g. infinite complements, parataxis, etc.) receded. Part III seeks to explain the historical developments in a theoretical light, showing how the development in Akkadian is mirrored in many other languages. It goes on to suggest that the emergence of finite complementation may be seen as 'adaptive' and related to the development of more complex communication patterns. This book will be of interest to both specialists and general linguists alike. For specialists it offers a contribution towards a badly-needed historical grammar of the Akkadian language. For general linguists this book will be of interest not only for the questions which it raises about the nature of complementation, but also for the window which it provides on to this little-known language.
