"Be with me always--take any form--drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you!" Thus does Heathcliff beg his dead Cathy in Wuthering Heights. He wants to be haunted--he insists on it. Randon Billings Noble does too. Instead of exorcising the ghosts of her past, she hopes for their cold hands to knock at the window and to linger. Be with Me Always is a collection of essays that explore hauntedness by considering how the ghosts of our pasts cling to us. In a way, all good essays are about the things that haunt us until we have somehow embraced or understood them. Here, Noble considers the ways she has been haunted--by a near-death experience, the gaze of a nude model, thoughts of widowhood, Anne Boleyn's violent death, a book she can't stop reading, a past lover who shadows her thoughts--in essays both pleasant and bitter, traditional and lyrical, and persistently evocative and unforgettable.

Description :

A deeply personal, revealing, and lyrical portrait of Duane Allman, founder of the legendary Allman Brothers Band, written by his daughter “Duane Allman was my big brother, my partner, my best friend. I thought I knew everything there was to know about him, but Galadrielle’s deep and insightful book came as a revelation to me, as it will to everyone who reads it.”—Gregg Allman Galadrielle Allman went to her first concert as an infant in diapers, held in her teenage mother’s arms. Playing was her father—Duane Allman, who would become one of the most influential and sought-after musicians of his time. Just a few short years into his remarkable career, he was killed in a motorcycle accident at the age of twenty-four. His daughter was two years old. Galadrielle was raised in the shadow of his loss and his fame. Her mother sought solace in a bohemian life. Friends and family found it too painful to talk about Duane. Galadrielle listened intently to his music, read articles about him, steeped herself in the mythic stories, and yet the spotlight rendered him too simple and too perfect to know. She felt a strange kinship to the fans who longed for him, but she needed to know more. It took her many years to accept that his life and his legacy were hers, and when she did, she began to ask for stories—from family, fellow musicians, friends—and they began to flow. Galadrielle Allman’s memoir is at once a rapturous, riveting, and intimate account of one of the greatest guitar prodigies of all time, the story of the birth of a band that redefined the American musical landscape, and a tender inquiry of a daughter searching for her father in the memories of others. Praise for Please Be with Me “Poignant and illuminating . . . brings Duane Allman to life in a way that no other biography will ever be able to do.”—BookPage “Galadrielle Allman offers a moving and poetic portrait of her late father.”—Rolling Stone “[Allman’s] descriptions and scenes are vivid, even cinematic. . . . The pleasure of reading Please Be With Me lies as much in its lyrical prose as in its insider anecdotes.”—Newsweek “An elegantly written, heartfelt account.”—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution “Evokes a wistful, elegiac atmosphere; fans of the ’70s music scene may find it indispensable.”—San Jose Mercury News “A compelling and intimate portrait of Duane.”—The Hollywood Reporter “Illuminating.”—Kirkus Reviews “Frequently touching . . . Readers will come away feeling more connected to the man and his music.”—Publishers Weekly

We promised each other that we would always be together no matter what, as we snuggled close to one another and kissed. He smelled so good that he was turning me on but that had to wait, I had to be satisfied with just his warm body next to mine. We both fell asleep wrapped in each others arms. I had a funny feeling and opened my eyes to see Bob sitting up in bed. What's the matter I asked? He said he just didn't feel right. Instant panic grew inside of me as I dialed 911. Bob screamed out my name as he held his arms out. I went into his arms, he hugged me and his whole body went limp. I couldn't feel a pulse and leaned on his chest to listen to his heartbeat but there was nothing. As the medics arrived I let them in and was told to stay in the living room. I don't know why but I felt that Bob's heart had beat it's final beat. I knew deep down in my heart that no matter how hard I could shake him, or how desperately I cried or yelled or even prayed he would never wake up again. He promised me we would always be together and now he is dead.

Set in Northern England from the late 18th to early 19th centuries, Wuthering Heights is a story of intense and passionate love, hate, and revenge. Mr. Earnshaw, owner of Wuthering Heights, raises an orphan named Heathcliff and he favors him more than his own son, Hindley. Hindley hates Heathcliff but his sister Catherine is fond of Heathcliff and they quickly become close companions. Complications later arise when Edgar and Isabella Linton of Thrushcross Grange come into the picture. Edgar is handsome and rich. Heathcliff and Catherine grow apart as she becomes closer to Edgar. Catherine's love for her soulmate Heathcliff never dies but Edgar loves her, too, and she cannot ignore the possible social comforts Edgar can provide her. Will wealth and social class stand in the way of the undying love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw? 'My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath: a source of little visible delight, but necessary. Nelly, I am Heathcliff! He's always, always in my mind: not as a pleasure, any more than I am always a pleasure to myself, but as my own being. ' 'Oh, Cathy! Oh, my life! how can I bear it?' was the first sentence he uttered, in a tone that did not seek to disguise his despair. And now he stared at her so earnestly that I thought the very intensity of his gaze would bring tears into his eyes; but they burned with anguish: they did not melt. 'What now?' said Catherine, leaning back, and returning his look with a suddenly clouded brow: her humour was a mere vane for constantly varying caprices. 'You and Edgar have broken my heart, Heathcliff! And you both come to bewail the deed to me, as if you were the people to be pitied! I shall not pity you, not I. You have killed me--and thriven on it, I think. How strong you are! How many years do you mean to live after I am gone?' 'Be with me always--take any form--drive me mad! only do not leave me in this abyss, where I cannot find you! Oh, God! it is unutterable! I cannot live without my life! I cannot live without my soul!'

While attending and presenting a religious couples’ weekend, I took some time to write a letter to my spouse. While writing that letter, I suddenly wrote the words “I can enter your life if you let me” in the notebook I was using. I was surprised and deeply shaken as soon as I wrote them, because I knew they were not a part of my letter to my spouse, but were words that God was communicating directly to me. At the same time, I felt an overwhelming feeling of peacefulness as I had never experienced before. When we returned home, I was able to continue writing reflections of a spiritual nature anytime I quieted myself, prayed, picked up a notebook, took pen in hand, and started to write. When I would write, it seemed that the words would flow out at about five times the speed I would usually write. I did not have to even think about what came out of my mind. The words just flowed out. At a later date, I clearly heard the words spoken to me: “You will write a book, and it will be read by many.” The writings within this book are a result of these efforts over the next several years. I believe this is from God because when you encounter a deep sense of peacefulness, you just know it is bestowed from above and not of this world. My hope is that these writings will be well received by many and that its inspirations will create many positive benefits. This book contains 103 short inspirational reflections, prayers and communications from God. Each reflection is written either from the perspective of God speaking to you, or you speaking to God. They have the goal of drawing you deeper into prayer and into a personal conversation with our glorious God. The reflections cover the following general topics: prayer, trust, faith, hope love, blessings, guidance, giving, change, wisdom, protection, suffering, peace, surrender, comfort. Here is a sample of the first reflection in this book: THE LAND OF THE LORD Your difficulties will pass. Your troubles will vanish. Your confusion will diminish. Your hope will grow. Your heart will be filled with holiness, as you place your life into My hands. Do not let fears prevent your surrender. Do not let anxiousness distract you from Me. Do not let selfishness mislead you. I AM the goal you search for and desire. I AM the force you crave and seek. I AM the ending you wish for. Let yourself go and surrender your life to Me. Push aside what restricts and misguides you and join Me. Let Me lift you into the zones of My lands. My house awaits your entry. My servants have prepared your room. Your name has been listed with those from other times. Your place with Me awaits you. Let your expectations be lifted and trust in My Word, as you belong to My land. Look forward to this event and live each day, knowing your place with Me awaits you.

Description :

Theodore of Mopsuestia, born in Antioch (c. 350) and a disciple of Diodore of Tarsus, serves as one of the most important exemplars of Antiochene exegesis of his generation. Committed to literal, linguistic, grammatical and historical interpretation, he eschewed allegorical explanations that could not be supported from the text, though he was not averse to typological interpretations of Old Testament texts that were supported by the New. Regrettably, Theodore was dragged posthumously into the Nestorian controversy, and his works were condemned by the Three Chapters and the Council of Constantinople in 553. As a result many of his theological and exegetical works were lost or destroyed. The original Greek version of his Commentary on the Gospel of John remains only in fragments. This new English translation is based on an early complete Syriac translation dated A.D. 460-465, within forty years of Theodore’s death in 428. While charges of heterodoxy against Theodore may not be entirely justified, there remains an apparent dualism in his Christology that should be critically viewed in light of the later Chalcedonian formula. With this caution, there still remains much that is valuable for contemporary readers, whether preachers, students or lay people interested in the early church’s understanding of the Gospel of John. Here for the first time is a complete English translation of this valuable work, ably translated by Marco Conti and edited by Joel C. Elowsky. Ancient Christian Texts is a series of new translations, most of which are here presented in English for the first time. The series provides contemporary readers with the resources they need to study for themselves the key writings of the early church. The texts represented in the series are full-length commentaries or sermon series based on biblical books or extended scriptural passages.
