Description :

"On the publication of his first novel, The Tin Drum, Günter Grass was acclaimed internationally as the most imaginative and powerful novelist to come out of postwar Germany. Cat and Mouse has the same setting that The Tin Drum made famous: Danzig and its petty bourgeoisie. But the art form is deliberately different. Brief and compact, it focuses on the extraordinary fate and person of one hero, Joachim Mahlke, fourteen years old when the story starts. Mahlke is set apart from his fellows by an unusual excrescence of cartilage, a huge Adam's apple, sign and symbol of precocious virility, at once embarrassing and stimulating to its bearer. When a classmate sics a cat on Mahlke's "mouse," he unwittingly launches him on a hero's career. In order to compensate for his mouse, Mahlke turns himself into an athlete and ace diver who brings up from a half-submerged ship all kinds of hardware to string around his neck. He becomes "The Great Mahlke," first to his classmates and later to the nation. Mahlke's mentors, however, refuse to be impressed. For the cat watching him, ready to pounce, is a society of petty men. Not even by gaining his country's highest honor, the Order of Merit, the most dazzling piece of hardware to cover his protuberance, does Mahlke succeed in conciliating his enemies. Mahlke is different, Mahlke is doomed. With ferocious virtuosity, Gunter Grass maps the local and mental circumstances of Mahlke's dramatic and pathetic struggle, compelling the reader's participation and belief."--Book jacket.

Persia, that magical and mystical land centered on the Silk Route, is a land rich in folk lore. For hundreds and hundreds of years the stories in this book, and many others as well, have been told to the wondering boys and girls of that country, who, as they hear them, picture their native land as one of roses, tulips and pomegranates, where beautiful fairies build their castles in the rosy morn, and black gnomes fly around in the darkness of midnight. As travelers journeyed along the Silk Route they brought with them the folklore from the lands of those both the East and West of Persia. And so, a beautiful tapestry of folklore and children’s tales has been woven over the centuries. Herein are four wonderfully illustrated Persian tales which are but a sliver of the immense library of Persian folklore. The stories in this volume are: The Cat and The Mouse The Son of the Soap Seller The King's Treasure The King and The Fisherman KEYWORDS/TAGS: Persia, cat, mouse, Folklore, fairytales, myths, legends, children’s stories, Silk Route, Iran, Iraq, east, west, castles, soap seller, son, king, treasure, fisherman, wealth, riches,

Research of discrete event systems is strongly motivated by applications in flex ible manufacturing, in traffic control and in concurrent and real-time software verification and design, just to mention a few important areas. Discrete event system theory is a promising and dynamically developing area of both control theory and computer science. Discrete event systems are systems with non-numerically-valued states, inputs, and outputs. The approaches to the modelling and control of these systems can be roughly divided into two groups. The first group is concerned with the automatic design of controllers from formal specifications of logical requirements. This re search owes much to the pioneering work of P.J. Ramadge and W.M. Wonham at the beginning of the eighties. The second group deals with the analysis and op timization of system throughput, waiting time, and other performance measures for discrete event systems. The present book contains selected papers presented at the Joint Workshop on Discrete Event Systems (WODES'92) held in Prague, Czechoslovakia, on Au gust 26-28, 1992 and organized by the Institute of Information Theory and Au tomation of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague, Czechoslovakia, by the Automatic Control Laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) , Zurich, Switzerland, and by the Department of Computing Science of the University of Groningen, Groningen, the Netherlands.

In literatures worldwide, animal fables have been analyzed for their revealingly anthropomorphic views, but until now little attention has been given to the animal tales of China. The complex, competitive relationship between rodents (vilified as thieves of grain) and the felines with whom they are perennially at war is explored in this presentation of Chinese tales about cats and mice. Master translator Wilt Idema situates them in an overview of animal tales in world literature, in the Chinese literary tradition as a whole, and within Chinese imaginative depictions of animals. The tales demonstrate the animals’ symbolism and their unusually prominent—and verbal—role in the stories. These readings depict cats and mice in conflict, in marital bonds, and in litigation—most centrally in a legal case of a mouse against a cat in the underworld court of King Yama. Many of the stories adopt the perspective of the mice as animals merely trying to survive, while also recognizing that cats are natural hunters. This entertaining volume will appeal to readers interested in Chinese literature and society, comparative literature, and posthumanist consideration of human-animal relations.
