Description :

Charlie Munger, Berkshire Hathaway's visionary vice chairman and Warren Buffett's indispensable financial partner, has outperformed market indexes again and again, and he believes any investor can do the same. His notion of "elementary, worldly wisdom"—a set of interdisciplinary mental models involving economics, business, psychology, ethics, and management—allows him to keep his emotions out of his investments and avoid the common pitfalls of bad judgment. Munger's system has steered his investments for forty years and has guided generations of successful investors. This book presents the essential steps of Munger's investing strategy, condensed here for the first time from interviews, speeches, writings, and shareholder letters, and paired with commentary from fund managers, value investors, and business-case historians. Derived from Ben Graham's value-investing system, Munger's approach is straightforward enough that ordinary investors can apply it to their portfolios. This book is not simply about investing. It is about cultivating mental models for your whole life, but especially for your investments.

Description :

Charles Munger is Warren Buffett decade's long business partner, and his investment filter, jokingly called by Mr. Buffett - the abominable no man. The early pages cover Munger's family history, his framework for investing [wait for the fat pitches, and assess each opportunity using rational, rigorous frameworks drawn from multiple disciplines (and not finance theory!)], and even some warm testaments from family, friends and colleagues. The next section, assembled by leading investor Whitney Tilson, is well edited and benefits from Tilson's massaging of quotations made over time into logical sub-headings. The bulk of the text though is, as the subtitle suggests, the wit and wisdom of Mr. Munger as conveyed through various speeches in the last couple decade or so before 2006.

Praise for Damn Right! From the author of the bestselling WARREN BUFFETT SPEAKS. . . "Charlie Munger, whose reputation is deep and wide, based on an extraordinary record of brilliantly successful business strategies, sees things that others don't. There is a method to his mastery and, through this book, we get a chance to learn about this rare individual." -MICHAEL EISNER, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company "Janet Lowe uncovers the iconoclastic genius and subtle charm behind Charlie Munger's curmudgeonly facade in this richly woven portrait of our era's heir to Ben Franklin. With a biographer's detachment, an historian's thoroughness, and a financial writer's common sense, Lowe produces a riveting account of the family, personal, and business life of the idiosyncratically complex and endlessly fascinating figure." -LAWRENCE CUNNINGHAM, Cardozo Law School, Author of The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America "For years, Berkshire Hathaway shareholders and investors worldwide (me included) have struggled to learn more about Warren Buffett's cerebral sidekick. Now we can rest and enjoy reading Janet Lowe's book about this rare intellectual jewel called Charlie Munger." -ROBERT G. HAGSTROM, Author of The Warren Buffett Way "Charlie has lived by the creed that one should live a life that doesn't need explaining. But his life should be explained. In a city where heroism is too often confused with celebrity, Charlie is a true hero and mentor. He lives the life lessons that he has studiously extracted from other true heroes and mentors, from Ben Franklin to Ben Graham. This book illuminates those life lessons." -RONALD L. OLSON, Munger, Tolles & Olson llp "Janet Lowe's unprecedented access to Charlie Munger and Warren Buffett has resulted in a first-class book that investors, academics, and CEOs will find entertaining and highly useful."-TIMOTHY P. VICK, Money Manager and Author of How to Pick Stocks Like Warren Buffett

Description :

Charlie Munger is an American investor, businessman and philanthropist. He is vice chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate controlled by Warren Buffett; Buffett has described Munger as his partner. Munger served as chairman of Wesco Financial Corporation from 1984 through 2011. He is also chairman of the Daily Journal Corporation, based in Los Angeles, California, and a director of Costco Wholesale Corporation. Munger was born in Omaha, Nebraska. As a teenager he worked at Buffett & Son, a grocery store owned by Warren Buffett's grandfather. After enrolling in the University of Michigan, where he studied mathematics, he never returned to Omaha except to visit. In early 1943, a few days after his 19th birthday, he dropped out of college to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he became Second Lieutenant. He continued his studies in meteorology at Caltech in Pasadena, California, the town he was to make his home. Through the GI Bill he took a number of advanced courses through several universities; without an undergraduate degree, he entered Harvard Law School and graduated magna cum laude with a J.D. in 1948. At Harvard he was a member of the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau. In college and the Army he developed "an important skill" card playing. "What you have to learn is to fold early when the odds are against you, or if you have a big edge, back it heavily because you don't get a big edge often. Opportunity comes, but it doesn't come often, so seize it when it does come."

"The Four Filters Invention of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger" examines each of the steps they perform in framing and making an investment decision. The author believes that Buffett and Munger expanded the field of "Behavioral Finance" by using this thoughtful and effective process. The genius of Buffett and Munger's four filters process was to capture all the important stakeholders in their decision making. Imagine... Products, Enduring Customers, Managers, and Margin-of-Safety... all in one mixed "qual + quant" formula. This second edition contains additional examples in this amazing process. This edition also contains the author's look into their 1988 valuation of Coca-Cola. Each chapter has additional specific examples. The author also discusses additional insights he has learned in the past five years since the first edition was released.

Description :

The Warren Buffett Way provided the first look into the strategies that the master uses to pick stocks. A New York Times bestseller, it is a valuable and practical primer on the principles behind the remarkable investment run of the famed oracle of Omaha. In this much-awaited companion to that book, author Robert Hagstrom takes the next logical step, revealing how to profitably manage stocks once you select them. THE WARREN BUFFETT PORTFOLIO will help you through the process of building a superior portfolio and managing the stocks going forward. Building a concentrated portfolio is critical for investment success. THE WARREN BUFFETT PORTFOLIO introduces the next wave of investment strategy, called focus investing. A comprehensive investment strategy used with spectacular results by Buffett, focus investing directs investors to select a concentrated group of businesses by examining their management and financial positions as compared to their stock prices. A strategy that has historically outperformed the market, focus investing is based on the principle that a shareholder's return from owning a stock is ultimately determined by the economics of the underlying business. Hagstrom explains in easy-to-understand terms exactly what focus investing is, how it works, and how it can be applied by any investor at any level of experience. He demonstrates how Buffett arranges his stocks in a focus portfolio and reveals why this is as responsible for his incredible returns as the individual stocks he picks. Ultimately, Hagstrom shows how to use this technique to build and manage a portfolio to achieve the best possible results.

Description :

"Peter Bevelin begins this quest for wisdom by embarking on an ambitious journey into the Darwinian forces at the reins of human decision-making, illustrating just how our pre-agrarian genetic hard-wiring all too-often leads us into disastrous lapses in judgement, whether in financial transactions, business decisions or in everyday life, and ultimately offering us methods to sidestep error and enhance success. Bevelin argues that by being aware of the driving forces behind human nature, we can then more effectively approach our responsibilities in the workplace by conditioning ourselves to approach everyday problems through the logistical anchors of mathematical and scientific thinking. The philosophy of Berkshire Hathaway's Director and Vice-Chairman Charles Munger is offered as counterpoint to the notion that we are simply pawns of our own nature; instead, by actively engaging our knowledge of the natural determinants - biology, math, physics, etc. - and through studying diligently the philosophies of those who have weathered the storm and emerged victorious, we can use this knowledge to our distinct advantage in not only business but in all walks of life."

"This is that rarity, a useful book."--Warren Buffett Howard Marks, the chairman and cofounder of Oaktree Capital Management, is renowned for his insightful assessments of market opportunity and risk. After four decades spent ascending to the top of the investment management profession, he is today sought out by the world's leading value investors, and his client memos brim with insightful commentary and a time-tested, fundamental philosophy. Now for the first time, all readers can benefit from Marks's wisdom, concentrated into a single volume that speaks to both the amateur and seasoned investor. Informed by a lifetime of experience and study, The Most Important Thing explains the keys to successful investment and the pitfalls that can destroy capital or ruin a career. Utilizing passages from his memos to illustrate his ideas, Marks teaches by example, detailing the development of an investment philosophy that fully acknowledges the complexities of investing and the perils of the financial world. Brilliantly applying insight to today's volatile markets, Marks offers a volume that is part memoir, part creed, with a number of broad takeaways. Marks expounds on such concepts as "second-level thinking," the price/value relationship, patient opportunism, and defensive investing. Frankly and honestly assessing his own decisions--and occasional missteps--he provides valuable lessons for critical thinking, risk assessment, and investment strategy. Encouraging investors to be "contrarian," Marks wisely judges market cycles and achieves returns through aggressive yet measured action. Which element is the most essential? Successful investing requires thoughtful attention to many separate aspects, and each of Marks's subjects proves to be the most important thing.

However, when in doubt or at a crossroad, ask yourself: "What would Charlie Munger Do?" More often than not, you'll find the right answer there. Charlie Munger's views are perspicacious, penetrative and invariably right. As Charlie Munger's reading list is much sought-after by his followers, a list of books recommended by the master is appended at the end of the book.

Are you tired of trying to "Beat the Market?"or paying some else to manage your investments, which don't seem to be going anywhere? Or maybe you are ready to start managing your own affairs.Do you want to find a simpler method of investing, one that makes sense and will help you earn a growing In-come during your retirement? I may have the answer you've been looking for. I'll provide you with a method of stock evaluation that identifies quality income growth stocks and show you how to build an investment portfolio that will provide you with a steady and ever-growing income. You won't be constantly looking for new stocks to buy, you won't fall for the latest stock crazes. You won't be monitoring the price of your stocks, worrying about market fluctuations or portfolio value. You won't have to wait until the end of the year to see how your investment strategy is working. Your income growth will be updated each month or quarter.Yes, investing can be that easy. This book will show you how!I'd like to highlight a few items that you should keep in mind when reading through my book:1.I am not an academic and therefore, there will be no past analytical data, forecasting or comparisons to other strategies.2.There will be no charts on how well one might do with this strategy or assumptions on potential earnings.3.There will be no sample portfolios or list of recommended stocks or other investments.4.Every effort will be made to provide you with clear and precise steps on the strategy I propose.5.Examples provided are from accounts I am familiar and represent real numbers.6.Examples presented are not a guarantee of similar success in the future, but, as real-world results of practicing the process we recommend. 7.There will be no reference to current market value throughout the book, such as: "This portfolio is now worth..$" or "We have beat the market by...% over the past....years".8.This book will present and explain a process for you to follow. Much of the information will detail a step-by-step process much like a workbook or exercise book.9.I will avoid recommending individual stocks, instead provide you with the task of evaluating stocks on your own with a set of guidelines, how to gather the data, how to analyze the data (as best I can) and allow you to make your own decisions, whether a stock qualifies.10.This book was written specifically for the Canadian investor, but, the strategy I propose, will work as well in any country. You will select from your particular index or stocks and apply the steps outlined in the book in the manner described. You may also need to find an online source should the sites we use may not provide the data on your indexes or stocks.11. It is not necessary to repeat the steps outlined in the book once you have established your own list of stocks. You would only repeat the process if you wish to apply it to different stocks or indexes.12.The process will not become outdated over time. The status of the companies may change but, the process will continue to screen out those which do not meet our requirements.Don't play their game, play yours. With this book, we are not going to play their price game. Certainly, the goal is to purchase stocks, keeping in mind there are no guarantees in investing, just as there are no guarantees in life. But we'll change the game so that it works to your benefit by providing you with results that are measured, not by price or the direction of the market, but with you having greater control over your returns, where you will be able to see those returns grow. We're not going to play their game of needing to beat the market, rather, we'll play our own game, with our own rules, ignoring the market altogether!
