Description :

The nautical dimension of prehistory has not so far received the attention it deserves. It is also too often assumed that early man was land bound, yet this is demonstrably not the case. Recent research has shown that man travelled and tracked over greater distances and at a much earlier date than has previously been thought possible. Some of these facts can be explained only by man's mastery of water transport from earliest times. This book, by an acknowledged expert on prehistoric sea-craft, examines these problems looking at the new archaeological information in the light of the author's nautical knowledge. The result is a detailed account of man's use of inland and ocean-going craft from earliest times until the dawn of recorded history. All forms of evidence are critically assessed, from the vessels of Ancient Egypt to the Chinese junk, to present of comprehensive picture of the vessels men have built through the ages, and of the variety of ways in which they have been used.

Canada's microbrewing movement began in British Columbia with the founding of Horseshoe Bay Brewing in 1982. Beer tourists are coming in droves, and private liquor stores are selling exclusive bottles of beer at prices previously reserved only for fine wine. With profiles of each of B.C.'s craft breweries, as well as maps, tasting tours and an insider's look at the people behind the kegs and casks, Craft Beer Revolution is the definitive guide to British Columbia's booming craft beer scene, from the movement's early founders still thriving today-Spinnakers, Granville Island and Vancouver Island-to the current industry leaders-Central City, Howe Sound and Driftwood-as well as the most remote-Tofino Brewing, Townsite in Powell River, and Plan B in Smithers. Each brewery has a tale to tell, and Joe Wiebe, the Thirsty Writer, has heard them all. B.C.'s leading beer writer, he has spent the last decade travelling throughout the province, sampling craft beer wherever he can find it. The landing craft assault or LCA was one of the unsung heroes of the Second World War. It took part in practically every amphibious operation from Norway to Normandy and landed around 400,000 men in action conditions, plus many more in training. It was the only serviceable British landing craft at the beginning of the War, and it remained in service until the Suez operation of 1956. It landed the first waves of infantry on the British and Canadian beaches in Normandy in 1944, and Americans on the notorious Omaha Beach. Its far-sighted design of 1938 remains the basis for the landing craft of today. This is the first book devoted to this humble but essential craft. It examines its design history before the War, when amphibious operations were deeply unfashionable. It describes its design and construction with plans that will be useful to modellers and wargamers. It includes information on the role of the crew and the techniques and tactics used in landings. It gives an account of the larger ships which carried it and the life of the sailors and soldiers who travelled in it, with many vivid personal accounts. Finally, it describes its role in the many operations in which it took part, including withdrawals such as Dunkirk and the catastrophic Dieppe raid of 1942.
