From New York Times bestseller Geneva Lee comes the next deliciously dirty book in her all-new Dynasties series. Full of shocking twists, sizzling chemistry, forbidden pleasure, and an ending you'll never see coming... What would you do for ten million dollars? I made a deal. One year of my life pretending to be a rich aristocrat in exchange for ten million pounds. Enough money to start over somewhere new. Enough money to disappear forever. It sounded simple, but being Kerrigan Belmond is more dangerous than I expected. Her world isn’t as perfect behind closed doors as it is on paper. I didn’t just sell one year of my life, I sold my virginity and soul to the enigmatic and manipulative Spencer Byrd. Being with him is only a temporary arrangement. My body shouldn’t tighten under his penetrating gaze. His touch shouldn’t electrify me. I should say no to his dirty demands, especially when they involve his cruel brother, Holden. I should keep my distance from both. Instead, I keep playing their twisted game, knowing pleasure is the prize. Plus, I need Holden to spill the secret he’s keeping, especially since he might know the truth behind Kerrigan’s absence. But if he does, that means he knows the truth about me, too. There’s a bigger problem, though. The longer I pretend to be Kerrigan, the harder it is to remember the fortune, the fame, and the brothers aren’t mine—and that if I make one wrong move, I lose everything.

Hun, the universal appellation for terror, was earned with brutality and blood. Legend has it that Mahira, a Hun dynasty King of the early 6th century, was the most cruel man of all time. Sagala, the capital of his vast but dying empire, that extended from the Central Steppes, over the Hindu Kush, into what is modern-day Pakistan and north-western India, to the borders of the Gupta Empire, was a place where unrivalled beauty and extreme bestiality existed in uneasy alliance. Like his predecessors, Mahira too, had visions that made him both feared as well as invincible. Obsessed with the desire to rule the world, he set off into the grasslands of Central Asia, on a journey to unite every kingdom known to man, under his savage rule. But the Gods scoffed at his hubris and visited him with nightmarish visions and excruciating pain. A prisoner of intense suffering, Mahira grew ever more erratic, ever more brutal. His heinous murder of the King of Lanka, lives on in folklore to this day. On taking the kingdom of Kashmir, he ordered the massacre of the entire Buddhist population. On a whim, he slaughtered a hundred of his own elephants. But, as this victim of malady escapes execution, hatred, betrayal, conflict and war, all he truly desires is the love of his Queen. Centuries have passed since King Mahira lived and ruled, but his infamy and deeds live on in legend and folklore. And echoes of his aggression, quest for power, world domination and subjugation of people, resound 1400 years later, with dangerous portent, in a world given increasingly to violence and terror.

Description :

This book explores the political, economic, and cultural forces, locally and globally that have shaped the evolution of Chinese primetime television dramas, and the way that these dramas in turn have actively engaged in the major intellectual and policy debates concerning the path, steps, and speed of China’s economic and political modernization during the post-Deng Xiaoping era. It intertwines the evolution of Chinese television drama particularly with the ascendance of the Chinese New Left that favors a recentralization of state authority and an alternative path towards China’s modernization and China’s current administration’s call for building a "harmonious society." Two types of serial drama are highlighted in this regard, the politically provocative dynasty drama and the culturally ambiguous domestic drama. The book also provides cross-cultural comparisons that parallel the textual and institutional strategies of transnational Chinese language TV dramas with dramas from the three leading centers of transnational television production, the US, Brazil and Mexico in Latin America, and the Korean-led East Asia region. The comparison reveals creative connections while it also explores how the emergence of a Chinese cultural-linguistic market, together with other cultural-linguistic markets, complicates the power dynamics of global cultural flows.
