Excerpt from Elementary Economics Nature and Importance of Economics. - 'Political-Economy,' according to its derivation from three Greek words, means the law of household management applied to communities. It is very often called Economics for short. More directly, it may be denned as the study of the making, exchanging, sharing, and using of wealth. The first great treatise on Economics in English was written by Adam Smith (a professor in the University of Glasgow) and published in 1776. It was entitled the Wealth of Nations. Almost immediately it began to exert a wide influence. The science so comprehensively expounded by Adam Smith has naturally developed almost beyond recognition since his time. Excerpt from Elementary Economics With Special Reference to Social, and Business Conditions in the United States Recent events have brought the people of the United States face to face with numerous new economic problems, many of which are likely to remain unsolved for years to come; besides, they have complicated to a marked degree those old problems which were pressing for solution at the outbreak of the Great War. In consequence, our leaders are becoming more and more convinced that increased attention should be given in our secondary schools to a serious consideration of the fundamental principles on which these problems rest. Such a conviction is a new one in many quarters, for hitherto the notion has very generally prevailed, especially among university teachers, that no formal study of the Principles of Economics should be undertaken before the sophomore year in college. Obviously such a notion carries the implication, unconscious perhaps, that the fundamentals of Economics, even in their simplest forms, should be withheld from the great mass of young men and women engaged in industry, and restricted to the select few who are able by one means or another to become college students. Such a notion not only carries vicious implication, but it also is ill founded; for hundreds of high schools the country over prove by experience that their pupils are fully capable of grasping the elements of economic science when presented concretely and in a way to show their relationship to practical affairs. Excerpt from Elementary Economics: An Introduction to the Study of Economics and Sociology A half century has greatly modified the food supply of the people. The monotonous, badly cooked diet of a few decades ago has been replaced in many homes by a well balanced variety. Cheap transportation has brought the products Of the tropics to our doors, and refrigeration and canning have annihilated time as far as the food supply is now concerned. The importance of this change in con serving the health of the indoor worker can scarcely be overemphasized. The lighting, heating, and sanitation Of dwelling places and workshops have been revolutionized since the day Fort Sumter was fired upon. Business Activity. Human beings are creatures Of wants or desires; and the wants Of the modern man and woman are a multitude compared with those of the primitive man or even of the pioneer. These varied wants or desires Of the men and women Of today are satisfied through all sorts Of activity, but chiefly as the result of the activity called work or business. In order to satisfy wants and to Obtain desired articles and services, men combine and cooperate and struggle and compete with one another in the business and the social world. Likewise, groups of individuals and nations do the same thing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
