Dear Reader, It’s always wonderful to return to a favorite place. That’s how I feel about Bittersweet, Oregon, the fictional setting for my 1990s trilogy, Forever Family, now collected here in one volume with a new title—Envious! I’m delighted to revisit Bittersweet in the company of Bliss, Katie, and Tiffany—three women who’ve just discovered they are half-sisters . . . Bliss Cawthorne is John Cawthorne’s only legitimate daughter, but her father’s wealth has complicated matters. Mason Lafferty believed he wasn’t good enough for the boss’s daughter and broke Bliss’s heart after saving her life. Yet now he’s back in Bittersweet, determined to make her trust him again. Tiffany Santini is widowed and struggling to raise two children after a car accident. That doesn’t mean she needs interference from her powerful brother-in-law. And Katie Kincaid is too busy wrangling her rambunctious son to get involved with the enigmatic cowboy next door. Then there’s the mystery at the heart of Bittersweet—the recent disappearance of an elderly local, Isaac Wells, who has vanished without trace, casting a dark cloud over all their lives . . . Join me in Bittersweet as these three very different, independent women try to escape the shadows of their pasts . . . Lisa Jackson

Is friendship worth protecting when your best friend is with your soul mate?I am not like everyone else. I have dreams, visions of past lives, that haunt even my waking hours. My past lives are filled with danger, deceit, and fleeting moments of love. And they are beginning to rule every moment of my present one. Since meeting Eric, they have only grown stronger. They are telling me something I cannot ignore: that he and I belong together.I know it sounds crazy, but I can't help believing these visions are real. There must be a reason for them. But what does it mean when they show me horrible things? What does it mean when they tell me not to trust my best friend?I may not have much, not the greatest family or many friends, but I do have a best friend whom everyone adores. Aurora is kind, pretty, and popular, and we have been inseparable since childhood. Since she began dating Eric, though, things have changed between us. Aurora doesn't deserve Eric, or my friendship. But what if I'm wrong? What if I'm crazy? Is believing the impossible a sign that I am losing my mind, or could ignoring these visions be dangerous?

Chapter Four reads Teresa Brennan's 'foundational fantasy' as a key feminist reworking of Kleinian envy, and introduces a distinction between what I call 'basic' and surplus envy. The fifth and final chapter engages with Jessica Benjamin's work on envy, gender and recognition, as an example of the reanimation of the concept of 'envy' from the perspective of relational psychoanalysis, and its contribution to a robust critical feminism. On the basis of this rich array of feminist adaptations I argue that the psychoanalytic concept of envy deserves to be rehabilitated from earlier simplistic readings of it as the product of misogynistic thought, and to be recognized as a highly productive tool for feminist analysis.

Description :

Bettelheim presents an account of his examination of initiation rites in present-day pre-literate societies and suggests that circumcision and related rituals may be the expression of male fascination with, and jealousy of, female sex apparatus and function. Broadly evaluating prevailing notions regarding puberty rites, Bettelheim describes ceremonies among different tribes--such as ritual subincision among the Arunta, transvestism among the African Changa, and many other customs--and also relates many myths that accompany the rituals.

Gore Vidal claimed, "Envy is the central fact of American life." Ethan Kross, professor of psychology at the University of Michigan who studies the impact of the social network Facebook on our wellbeing, concluded that "envy is being taken to an extreme". The author contends that envy as a Deadly Sin is so common in our society that most people are unaware of its presence in their lives and are unashamed about being envious even when they become aware of its existence. He believes envy is hardly ever confessed as a deadly sin not even to ourself. The book looks at the long history of envy in the Bible and its continual tragic results in today's news media and challenges the reader to look for envy in their own life. The author shares examples of envious thoughts and feelings he experiences and presents various ways to uncover, confront and overcome envy.

Description :

After studying the individual qua individual and as a member of a group and community, Harold Boris reached the conclusion that there is something even more fundamental than these - that the basis of envy is life itself. Taking off from this thesis as presented in his previous books, Passions of the Mind and Sleights of Mind, Boris shows that to be living and to grow up, marry, mate and reproduce, can be almost entirely separate from feeling that one truly has the right to do so. There are those who feel authentic and meant to be and they flourish, and there are those who feel that their life and success is an imposture. The former feel alive, the latter hollowed out with dread and culpability.
