Author : Toni Onley

Publisher : Harbour Publishing Company

Category : Biography & Autobiography
ISBN 13 : 9781550172980
Description :

If you're strolling a beach or ferry deck as sunset casts its glow on British Columbia's Coast Mountains, there's a good chance someone within earshot will say, "It looks just like a Toni Onley." That's how closely Onley is identified with the landscape of Canada's West Coast. Don't be fooled. The serenity of those watercolours reflects only one facet of Onley's work--and very little of his tumultuous life. Flying Colours gives you the whole canvas, from a rustic riverbank on the Isle of Man to a plane wreck on a mountain glacier. With sly humour, disarming candour and an artist's eye for detail, Onley recalls a life of professional triumphs and personal tragedies. For a painter known for landscapes and collages, Onley proves a dab hand at word portraits, from haughty maharajahs and quirky Manxmen to the alcoholic--and even homicidal--habitués of an artists' colony in Mexico. None is more colourful than Onley himself. From the cocky schoolboy painting an extra petal on a daffodil to the Rolls-Royce rebel facing down Revenue Canada--and winning--Onley's passion for art and zest for life leap from every page. Art lovers will cherish his lucid, unaffected insights into the creative process, not to mention the lavish illustrations, representing every stage of Onley's career. An Officer of the Order of Canada, Toni Onley was born in 1928 on the Isle of Man, where he received his early training and was influenced by the work of the great British watercolourists. He came to Canada in 1948. Onley's work is featured in galleries around the world, including the Tate Gallery in London, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Onley took up flying in 1965, a passion he credits with taking him to the work for which he is best known today: landscape of simplicity and power.

This early work by Charles G. D. Roberts was originally published in 1907 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Flying Colours' is an anthology of patriotic verse from Canada, the USA, and Great Britain, by various authors. Charles G. D. Roberts was born on 10th January 1860, in Douglas, New Brunswick, Canada. He was the eldest of the six children of Emma Wetmore Bliss and Rev. George Goodridge Roberts (an Anglican Priest). In 1880 he published his first collection of poetry 'Orion and Other Poems'. This work received favourable reviews and established him as a promising Canadian literary figure. During his time as a professor at University of King's College, Nova Scotia, Roberts published his second book of poetry, 'In Divers Tones' (1886). Roberts's most successful literary genre was that of the animal story which featured in works such as 'Earth's Enigmas' (1896) and 'Eyes of the Wilderness' (1933). He also wrote romance novels and several non-fiction works on Canada.

Description :

How to Face the realities of life… At the beginning of married life, the romantic thrills it brings are always overestimated, the responsibilities underestimated, and the uncertainties ignored altogether. The realities of marriage shock every couple at one point or another. Yet, with all its problems, this institution is nowhere near extinction. A School Called Marriage aims at buffering the inevitable reality-check and guiding you to the path of mutual bliss. Starting with the significance of choosing the right partner, to dealing with life and all its issues after marriage, the book looks at the entire spectrum of intimacy, parenting, relationship with extended family, work-family balance, and much more. Enriched and illustrated by a large number of case studies, the book discusses dimensions and circumstances that are bound to make their way through the strongest of marriages. Not left out are also some unconventional choices such as lifelong bachelorhood, live-in relationships, role of sex, divorce, and the struggle for power and control in relationships. The authors – Dr Ramesh Bijlani and Dr Arpita Lal – a father-daughter team, bring to the book the wisdom culled from their extensive professional experience; the wisdom that is needed for turning marriage from a necessary evil into a mutually enriching relationship.
