For most British people the weekend of 27/28 October 1962 could so very easily have been their last weekend on earth. Yet, astonishingly, the fact that Britain's nuclear deterrent forces were set to such an unprecedented level of readiness was kept secret from the public. Thor nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles stood on a round-the-clock wartime state of alert ready to be fired; these were the 'other' missiles of the Cuban Missile Crisis, which made Britain, in effect, America's launch pad. During the height of the crisis both RAF Bomber Command and the US Strategic Air Command were poised at the highest states of readiness. Both were ordered to a level of war readiness unparalleled throughout the whole of the forty years of Cold War. There is evidence to suggest that, had the US needed to launch an air strike against Russian missiles in Cuba, President Kennedy might have been willing to absorb a Soviet nuclear assault on a NATO ally without retaliation, if it would have avoided escalation to World War Three. It is sobering to those who lived through that period that the British Ambassador to Cuba commented: 'If it was a nuclear war we were headed for, Cuba was perhaps a better place to be than Britain!'

Description :

The Silent Guns of Two Octobers uses new as well as previously under-appreciated documentary evidence to link the Cuban Missile Crisis to the Checkpoint Charlie tank standoff to achieve the impossible--craft a new, thoughtful, original analysis of a political showdown everyone thought they knew everything about. Ultimately the book concludes that much of the Cold War rhetoric the leaders employed was mere posturing; in reality neither had any intention of starting a nuclear war. Theodore Voorhees reexamines Khrushchev's and Kennedy's leadership, decision, and rhetoric in light of the new documentary evidence available. Voorhees examines the impact of John F. Kennedy's domestic political concerns about his upcoming first midterm elections on his handling of the Cuban Missile Crisis through his use of back-channel dealings with Khrushchev during the lead-up to the crisis and in the closing days when the two leaders managed to reach a settlement.

St George's Day has become a topic of debate as more and more organizations promote celebrations on 23 April and more people wave the flag of St George to proclaim their allegiance and identity. But who was St George? How did this Near Eastern martyr become England's patron saint and an icon of English culture? And what is his relevance for today's secular, multicultural England? New research reveals that from the third century St George was revered as a healer, protector of women and the poor and patron of agriculture and metal-working more than a military dragon-slayer. Discover the origin of the cross of St George and the roles of Richard I, Edward III and Henry VIII in making St George the patron saint of England. With a foreword by Professor Emeritus Dan Brown, this richly-illustrated celebration of English culture shows how St George can be reinterpreted for our times while remaining true to our English heritage. St George can be enlisted in the cause of ecology, the campaign against FGM, and the fight to end modern slavery and resettle refugees. English yet international, revered both by Christians and Muslims, St George is a multicultural figure who symbolizes universal values.

At the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Britain was Americas first-line defense, a vulnerable, but unsinkable aircraft carrier on which the United States based the Strategic Air Commands first-strike elements of their Americas nuclear deterrent. The Strategic Air Commands UK bases and the RAFs V-Force were ordered to the highest state of readiness at any time during the Cold War. Nuclear weapons were loaded, some nuclear-armed aircraft went on round-the-clock airborne patrol, others were held at cockpit readiness. But the British public was largely unaware that, as tensions rose thousands of miles away, the UK itself was under imminent threat of Armageddon. The book focuses on the implications for Britain of the covert deployment by the Soviet Union of ballistic nuclear missiles ninety miles off the US coast. It follows the crisis as it developed in London, Washington and Moscow. It looks at secret planning in the UK for World War III, and the activities of the JIGSAW Group (Joint Inter-Services Group for the Study of All-Out War). It also examines how close the UK went to activating Visitation, the code name for the movement of parts of the British State into a secret bunker referred to in Whitehall as The Quarry.Britain on the Brink also reveals the major strategic rethink the Cuban Crisis forced on Prime Minister Macmillan and the British Government.

Description :

This edited volume addresses the main lessons and legacies of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis from a global perspective. Despite the discoveries of recent research, there is still much more to be revealed about the handling of nuclear weapons before and during the Cuban Missile Crisis (CMC). Featuring contributions from a number of eminent international scholars of nuclear history, intelligence, espionage, political science and Cold War studies, An International History of the Cuban Missile Crisis reviews and reflects on one of the critical moments of the Cold War, focussing on three key areas. First, the volume highlights the importance of memory as an essential foundation of historical understanding and demonstrates how events that rely only on historical records can provide misleading accounts. This focus on memory extends the scope of the existing literature by exploring hitherto neglected aspects of the CMC, including an analysis of the operational aspects of Bomber Command activity, explored through recollections of the aircrews that challenge accounts based on official records. The editors then go on to explore aspects of intelligence whose achievements and failings have increasingly been recognised to be of central importance to the origins, dynamics and outcomes of the missile crisis. Studies of hitherto neglected organisations such as the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the British Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) both extend our understanding of British and American intelligence machinery in this period and enrich our understanding of key episodes and assessments in the missile crisis. Finally, the book explores the risk of nuclear war and looks at how close we came to nuclear conflict. The risk of inadvertent use of nuclear weapons is evaluated and a new proposed framework for the analysis of nuclear risk put forward. This volume will be of much interest to students of intelligence studies, international history, foreign policy, security studies and IR in general.

The book is a response of the suggestions and opinions provided to me by the students on writing a text that could be beneficial for them and other readers. The book covers the period from the fifteenth century to the present (2014). It includes the development of Europe from mercantilism to a new imperialism, globalization and a neocolonial situation, and underdevelopment to the less developed countries in the southern hemisphere. It also justifies and revises important areas in the current (2009) syllabus, which had been left by other authors in writing history texts for the advanced level. Therefore, the book justifies some areas that are beyond the syllabus, but the questions do appear in examinations. The book is directed to be useful for A-level and college students, the teachers, and other readers who have an interest with history.

Number of teams that applied to Y Combinator’s summer 2011 batch: 2,089 Teams interviewed: 170 Minutes per interview: 10 Teams accepted and funded: 64 Months to build a viable startup: 3 Possibilities: BOUNDLESS Investment firm Y Combinator is the most sought-after home for startups in Silicon Valley. Twice a year, it funds dozens of just-founded startups and provides three months of guidance from Paul Graham, YC’s impresario, and his partners, also entrepreneurs and mostly YC alumni. The list of YC-funded success stories includes Dropbox (now valued at $5 billion) and Airbnb ($1.3 billion). Receiving an offer from YC creates the opportunity of a lifetime — it’s like American Idol for budding entrepreneurs. Acclaimed journalist Randall Stross was granted unprecedented access to Y Combinator’s summer 2011 batch of young companies, offering a unique inside tour of the world of software startups. Most of the founders were male programmers in their mid-twenties or younger. Over the course of the summer, they scrambled to heed Graham’s seemingly simple advice: make something people want. We watch the founders work round-the-clock, developing and retooling products as diverse as a Web site that can teach anyone programming, to a Wikipedia-like site for rap lyrics, to software written by a pair of attorneys who seek to “make attorneys obsolete.” Founders are guided by Graham’s notoriously direct form of tough-love feedback. “Here, we don’t fire you,” he says. “The market fires you. If you’re sucking, I’m not going to run along behind you, saying, ‘You’re sucking, you’re sucking, c’mon, stop sucking.’” Some teams would even abandon their initial idea midsummer and scramble to begin anew. The program culminated in “Demo Day,” when founders pitched their startup to several hundred top angel investors and venture capitalists. A lucky few attracted capital that gave their startup a valuation of multiple millions of dollars. Others went back to the drawing board. This is the definitive story of a seismic shift that’s occurred in the business world, in which coding skill trumps employment experience, pairs of undergraduates confidently take on Goliaths, tiny startups working out of an apartment scale fast, and investors fall in love.

Lean Manufacturing concept has brought new industrial revolution and the battle lines are clearly drawn. It is traditional mass production versus the trim and tidy lean Enterprising. Lean experts and past researchers plead; Lean production is a superior way for humans to make things. It provides better products in wider variety at lower cost. It provides more challenging and fulfilling work for employees at every level. The whole world should adopt lean production, and as quickly as possible. Henry Ford defined Lean Enterprising stating, “If it does not add value, it is waste”. This concept was later adopted by Toyota as the core idea behind the famous Toyota Production System (T.P.S). The Toyota Production System is the foundation of many books on “lean”. It is the story of Lean Production how Japan’s secret weapons in the global auto wars later revolutionized western industries. The concept of lean manufacturing was widely accepted. A Standard S.A.E J 4000:1999 was also released to specify Lean in detail. The purpose of this book is to share the knowledge and experience gained through collaborative contribution - with a wide range of readers including; students, managers, entrepreneurs, industrial leaders, university professors, and self-learning professionals. Implementation of lean practices mainly in automobile and engineering industries provide valuable insight. Further, the book describes how it can be applied to wider field of work including; shipbuilding, information technology, environmental protection, transportation services and performance management from human resource perspective. My presentations on LEAN in conferences and published papers in international journals like; Elsevier, IEEE, and David Publishing-USA are also included to provide valuable inputs. This book recommends the solution for immediate problems faced by industries and service sectors using lean principles and practices. The generic but common and critical problems that are discussed in depth include; economic crisis, global competition, scarce resources, quality issues, waste generation, volatile market, global warming, and poor performance. These issues have also been examined by the author in his other book, “Management Paradox: Re-examined” as source of tension, dilemma and contradiction. Relevant tools and techniques that are addressed and applied include; Kaizen, Five ‘S’, Visual Management, Just in Time, Kanban System, One Piece Flow, Single Minute Exchange of Die, Total Productive Maintenance and Poka Yoke. For a specific reason mistake-proofing (Poka Yoke) has been elaborated in detail for exploring its effectiveness to add value in product and services. This powerful lean tool took a long time to acquire its place in the list of popular tools because it challenged the effectiveness of statistical process control towards achieving zero-defect. The quantitative and qualitative approaches that have been selected and used based on the field of work and situation will be found interesting by research scholars. Methods like correlation analysis, test of hypothesis, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) have been carried out using the quantitative technique. Qualitative approach has been used for lean and sustainable transport system to understand people’s belief, perspective and experience. This approach supported in handling the important issues of consent and confidentiality. The book also presents the arguments on potential limitations of the lean manufacturing strategy on one hand and criticism on drifting definition of lean on other hand. The book firmly suggests instant applicability of lean principles and practices in sectors like manufacturing and construction. The way to apply lean in other sectors including ICT in conjunction with present practices like; agile for knowledge to apply tools, scrum for experience-based self-direction etc. are recommended. These sector- specific practices are supported by lean principles but the book discovers that exclusively focusing on software development without considering upstream and downstream operations severely limit the benefits. Therefore lean principles support agile and scrum and take much beyond software development. The ideas and recommendations offered in this book can be used for further implementation of lean in a large number of organizations and different fields including MSME, service-providing industries, healthcare, construction management, management education, and for army reforms. A leaner, modern military is the need of the hour.
