Description :

More than just a story about the personal journey of one of South Africa's most beloved music icons, this extraordinary memoir of PJ Powers - or Thandeka, as she was affectionately renamed by Soweto crowds - is set against the turbulent backdrop of South Africa's recent political history. It features a gallery of political leaders and international celebrities, including the likes of Nelson Mandela, Graça Machel, Chris Hani, Joaquim Chissano, Queen Elizabeth II, Brenda Fassie, Sharon Stone and Robert De Niro. On Republic Day 1982, a white rock and roll band called Hotline, wearing stonewashed jeans and sporting big hair, took an accidental sho't left into Soweto - a detour that forever changed the life of their lead singer, PJ Powers. Hotline was the first all-white rock and roll band to "cross over" into highly segregated apartheid South Africa, making international headlines in the process. The prolific Powers went on to accomplish extraordinary heights as a solo artist with countless gold and platinum discs. Here I Am, written with Marianne Thamm, is an intimate and hilarious account of the life and times of one of this country's most recognisable and enduring performers. From the dizzying heights of international stardom to the dark depths of her struggle with alcohol, this is a must-read to explore the heady mix of politics and music of the time.

Musical theatre is an international form, not just an American one. It can take root anywhere. Few people would realise that such hit standards as "The Glow Worm", "Brazil", "Mack the Knife", "I Will Wait for You" and "El Condor Pasa" came from foreign language musicals. ""His research is monumental... This is an important book on a previously undocumented area of musical theatre."" -- Peter Pinne, Stage Whispers ""There's never been a better book for the armchair-traveler-theatergoer."" -- Peter Filichia

Growing up on a farm in Kentucky, I know the meaning of a "hard day's work." As the sun was setting, we could hear Mom ringing the dinner bell. With a country meal on the table, Dad began to say the blessings. Believing life was simple, I had no idea of the turmoil ahead of me. After high school, I soon married, and my life changed forever as the beatings began. And within a few years, we had two little girls. I turned to the church for help, but they told me to turn the other cheek. My family could not help me financially. With no one to turn to, I fell into the darkness. So I filed for a divorce. One day, the girls' father took them for a weekend visit but ended up kidnapping them for three years! I prayed every day for my children's safety. Finding my girls was by the grace of God. We suffer with an emotional handicap, but because of our strong faith in God, we all now have wonderful lives. And I hope my book will touch many lives, covering issues such as bullying, human trafficking, women's rights, and spousal abuse to name a few. Writing Edge of the Light has given me a chance to continue to heal. Each chapter is inspired by one of the seven divine powers. The edge is a most divine place to be, it is structured by the hand of God. There you will be comforted and healed. Never lose hope, for the darkness is short-lived, but the Light shines forever. I can now ring my bell of freedom!

Description :

It is 1998. The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission is trying to make sense of over thirty years of human rights violations. In London, Lally, a white South African émigré, goes to dinner with Pim - a long-forgotten childhood friend - and his latterday English family. For Lally, adult existence has by choice remained transient, uprooted; a life of little consequence estranged from its own origins. But it is becoming clear that history will reach out, even to the inconsequential, and for Lally to seek out the truths of the child she must breach the hermetic safety of adult refuge. Moving between contemporary London and the rural South Africa of twenty years earlier, The Beneficiaries traces both the young woman's search for knowledge and self in a society that disallows individuality and the older woman's journey beyond apathy and disillusionment towards the renewal of vitality and hope. Exploring the shifting relations between memory, forgetting and denial, when the truth comes in many versions, and the inexorability of memory as the most merciless personal truth, The Beneficiaries is ultimately about the possibility of healing, in a nation and a human soul.

'That confidence trickster gave me an idea. An idea that could be made to work. All it needed was guts and brains. And I think I had them both.' So wrote Dugmore Boetie, recreating his gone days of Johannesburg's Sophiatown, and most of the rest of South Africa, improvising his smitten life of thievery and apartheid woes. A one-legged, unemployed ex-convict with an incriminating passbook could never have been thought of as so savagely funny. He was a rackety, resilient, fantastic scam-artist all the way.

Description :

During 1999 I was a normal, part time self employed, happily married, standard South African guy. 38 years old with a great future planned. I had most of the same hang ups that plagued everybody, mid month crisis and month end blues. My wife, step daughters, mother in law and myself, lived in the suburbs of Kempton Park, happily going about our daily business with minimal stress levels. During July 1999, I was temporally managing a hardware store in Greenside when the owner had a lump removed from his chest. The lump proved to be malignant but had not spread. I am fair haired and have a light skin complexion, and as I had been working outdoors repairing and installing irrigation systems, some of my freckles became dark and suspicious and as Mister Elsbach, the hardware store owner, had just had a tumour removed, dark freckles became a point of concern. I had four of my freckles removed and tested for all those wonderful things that life throws at you. The results of the tests on all four biopsies came back negative. Relief. Once again I believed that I was a reasonably healthy guy. Out of the blue, during September 1999, a slight swelling on the right side of my neck began to grow. Being a normal tough guy that I was, I didn’t worry about the swelling as swollen glands are part of growing up. Eventually, after many hours of putting up with a nagging wife, about six weeks later, and having difficulties using a razor to shave with, I made an appointment with our family GP. After a course of very strong antibiotics, everything on my body healed, including my navel, and excluding this lump in my neck, which had grown considerably in size during the previous weeks of treatment. A decision was made to remove the offending bits of swollen gland and send it off for tests. The removal of the lump was scheduled for the 1st of December 1999. The surgical removal of the lump was successful. The story that follows is a result of the lump removed from my neck. I come from a rather large family and I have four brothers and four sisters. For my wife and I to phone everybody with all the different news all the time was proving to be a rather time consuming project and was becoming rather costly. As I have family and friends all around the world, the most convenient form of communicating with everybody at once is email. I maintained a sort of an electronic diary with photo’s for all to see. This worked out quite well as some of my family and friends were involved in the medical services and understood the doctor’s medical jargon rather well, as well as wanting to create my own record. Understanding the medical jargon proved to be quite a life saver. Whenever I needed an explanation on any diagnosis, I would email Jerry in Australia and get an answer in English that we all could understand. The emails that I sent out to family members to keep all informed proved to be quite popular and the list of recipients grew and grew. This is my story of how I survived the diagnosis and the treatment. I have kept the diary as close to the original email format with some explanatory notes accompanying the story. Photos have been inserted into the episodes with notes attached relating to the current happenings relevant to that episode. Some photos have been duplicated purposefully. The last healthy picture before all hell broke loose.

Description :

“I owe it to many people, and to myself, to set the record straight. There have been many versions of parts of the story in the press over the years, many lies overlaid with truths and truths overlaid with lies. Much of the truth is just a palimpsest, an echo that changes even in the act of repeating it, but this is my story.” In the dying years of apartheid, a most extraordinary story hit the headlines. Agent Olivia Forsyth had escaped from ANC imprisonment in Angola. Upon her return home she was feted as a hero by the government. In a flurry of media appearances and press releases, Forsyth claimed to have infiltrated the ANC and passed on vital information. Is that what really happened? In the world of espionage, truth is the first victim and nothing is as it seems. Here, for the first time and in her own words, South Africa’s most notorious female spy during apartheid lays bare the story of her life. Olivia Forsyth was also known as agent RS407, codename Lara, lieutenant in the Security Branch of the South Africa Police, ANC comrade Helen Bronson, prisoner Thandeka, alias Christine Smith.

I do comprehend that my life was predesignated by God before He set the entire universe in order. My adventurous journey of.... Life failures, challenges, and my prison circumstances has caused me to realize that there is no demarcations Which can hinder me from reaching my God given Destiny, unless you place those limitations in your life. Remember that the choices you make today will determined whom you will become tomorrow. You are the product of your mind. Thomas Edison quoted “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realized how close they were to success when they gave up.” You Are Born To Win is an inspirational Christian autobiography by an extraordinary prisoner whom was convicted to twelve years imprisonment for several high profile cases. Nhlakanipho Tsakane Siyanda Sikobi has spent many awkward years on the street.... sleeping in the cold freezing weather without blankets, he was also imprisoned on many occasions. Nevertheless he never stopped seeking the main core of his dreams, purpose, identity and his destiny through God’s Word regardless of his daily prison ordeals. For the longest loneliest hard times he experienced behind those darkest prison corridors. However God’s light shone upon his life then the zeal of transformation and to discover his Identity was birthed. However he is absolutely certain that winners never intended to be life springbok, nevertheless they are very similar to a chameleon. They can transform their color anywhere and anytime to reflect the environment they are going through. What I believe is, they are born with perseverance they are determined to walk slowly to reach their destiny. Chameleon’s understands that perseverance is the sign of Victory.... No matter where they are they will never change their desire, instinct and determination. Success isn’t for people who run like a springbok. It is for people who will imitate a chameleon whom will never be inferior of how long the journey of success is. However they are determined and optimistic. If your potential to excel is strong enough.... Failure will not defeat the enthusiasm of success within you, and the power to discover the core purpose of life. I’m absolutely certain that failure will uplift you to a better place than yesterday. A genuine success is made up through life’s failures and life’s challenges, it is never made through success activities. Yet failure is the only door and the bridge to go through and to access greener pastures.

My sincere admiration for her brilliant work." —Annie Proulx In a remote Polish village, Janina devotes the dark winter days to studying astrology, translating the poetry of William Blake, and taking care of the summer homes of wealthy Warsaw residents. Her reputation as a crank and a recluse is amplified by her not-so-secret preference for the company of animals over humans. Then a neighbor, Big Foot, turns up dead. Soon other bodies are discovered, in increasingly strange circumstances. As suspicions mount, Janina inserts herself into the investigation, certain that she knows whodunit. If only anyone would pay her mind . . . A deeply satisfying thriller cum fairy tale, Drive Your Plow over the Bones of the Dead is a provocative exploration of the murky borderland between sanity and madness, justice and tradition, autonomy and fate.
