In this book, Nika Gilauri reveals his formulas for government reform and economic recovery, including how to fight against corruption, reform fiscal policy and tax systems, privatize state-owned enterprises, build a welfare system for those most in need, create a competitive education and healthcare system, and streamline procurement. All formulas are corroborated by practical experience and empirical evidence gathered during Mr Gilauri's term as a cabinet member (2004-2009) and prime minister (2009-2012) of Georgia, and provide an in-depth view of what worked in the case of Georgia since 2003, and how lessons learned could be applied in other parts of the world.

Through the years, I have become convinced that the fundamentals of economics, finance, and business can be mastered by anyone of average intelligence, ambition, and diligence. So, as I entered the final phase of my career, I decided to provide a book which would offer the reader the practical knowledge that I wish I'd gained before I became a naval officer, a graduate student, a banker, and a financial manager. I believe that these fifty-five lessons can provide the foundation for: 1) the general business manager who must juggle many responsibilities and relationships, and who hasn't the time for more formal education. He may choose to use the book as a reference. 2) the general student who knows that he must be familiar with business, finance, and economics to be effective in any career, including politics and journalism. 3) the undergraduate who wishes to get the most value from his expensive, upper-division specialty courses in business, economics, or finance, and doesn't feel prepared by the typical introductory courses. (Careful reading of this book over the summer before his junior year could make the difference.) 4) the entering graduate student who needs to fill gaps in his preparation, or review principles, before tackling a challenging program at a top graduate school. 5) the advanced graduate student who needs to review and integrate the basics, before taking his comprehensive examinations. I have written the book in a conversational style and laced it anecdotes, while minimizing technical requirements, so that readers can connect to the ideas and to their practical use. I wish that such a book had been available to me, while I was at sea for many months in the Navy. I would have read it between watches, and I would have been prepared to take better advantage of the wonderful opportunities that I had at Stanford University, at Bankers' Trust, and at Pitzer College. And I would have been more effective, as a community banker and a financial executive. The book has six sections. Each could stand alone as a separate course, and they usually do. However by organizing them into a logical sequence, each section prepares the student for the next, and duplication of material is avoided. Hence, nine lessons are adequate for each subject, and mastery of each subject is possible in ten weeks, instead of fifteen. The sections are: 1. Principles of Business Management (with an international business point of view) 2. Microeconomics (the study of producer and consumer behavior in markets) 3. Finance (financial markets and institutions, and principles of financial management) 4. International Economics (trade, finance, and open economy macroeconomics) 5. Macroeconomics (production, employment, economic growth, and business cycles) 6. Investing (securities markets, securities analysis, and personal financial planning) Because not every reader is interested in all six topics, I am publishing six small volumes as well as the entire work in two volumes. This is the first.

Excerpt from Practical Economics or Studies in Economic Planning In these days, that Simple faith has been eclipsed. Our fathers were much less certain of it than our grandfathers; and in our own day it is held at all only by way of obstinate reaction against the pre vailing conditions. Some economists continue to preach the theoretical soundness Of the older doctrine; but even they have to admit that the chance Of' seeing it applied in the modern world, as it was largely applied in Victorian England, has become Very small indeed. "Understanding economics is confusing, not understanding economics is costly." Practical Economics guides everyone toward an understanding of economics by teaching both the principles of the discipline, or how it works, as well as the practical application of economic principles, or why the discipline is important. In doing so, theory and practice merge allowing the reader to gain the ability to reason from an economic frame of mind. Economic realities affect your life and liberty. Get empowered - Read Practical Economics.

Excerpt from Practical Economics: A Collection of Essays Respecting Certain of the Recent Economic Experiences of the United States The essays embraced in this volume - with three exceptions - were originally contributed to and published in the Atlantic Magazine, the Princeton Review, the Nation, and the N. Y. World, at different dates from 1872 to 1884. The exceptions are "The Dollar of the Fathers vs. The Dollar of the Sons," which was published privately; the essay on "The Production and Distribution of Wealth," which has heretofore been published only in the Proceedings of the American Social Science Association; and the fourth chapter of "Our Experience in Taxing Distilled Spirits," which was written specially for this volume, and has never before been printed. The chief warrant for their republication in a collected form is to be found in the circumstance that, with the exception of the final article of the series, they each illustrate a phase in the recent economic experiences of the United States, which has not as yet been discussed or related as a part of any detailed and consecutive history; an experience in which questions of the highest importance in respect to the use and issue of currency, the imposition of taxes, the collection of revenue, and the regulation of trade and commerce - all involving transactions of enormous magnitude and infinite detail - have been discussed, regulated by legal enactments, and carried to practical results, without, for the most part, any reference whatever to accepted economic principles, and often mainly under the influence of selfish and sometimes of corrupt motives and agencies. Description :

Certain key economic decisions taken by organizations and indeed countries are often not made by economists but by businessmen, trade unionists, politicians and policy-makers. Those who employ people, those who represent workers, those who make laws and those who elect them need economics but may have little time or desire to study it. This book makes economics easily available to everyone. The author’s use of simple language and avoidance of technical jargon provides non-economists with a better understanding of economic reasoning and the tools "to know and to decide". The author achieves this through introducing key concepts in short presentations and arming the reader with selected press articles and recent research using these concepts. An analysis of these demonstrates how a general concept can be derived from a specific context and highlighted questions provide the basis for further debate. The reader can then focus on the parts most relevant to their own needs. This book will have great appeal to employers, trade unionists and public officials attending courses organized by international institutions, professional training providers, as well as graduate students of courses where economics is an important element, especially in relation to its policy implications. Finally, it is invaluable for anybody who has wanted to learn the basics of practical economics but has been deterred by its technicalities.
