Be energized, but not overwhelmed What’s the most pressure you’ve ever been under? How did you react? What helped? What didn’t? Over the past five years, Dane Jensen has asked these questions of thousands of high performers—from Olympic gold medalists to Navy SEALs, politicians, executives and busy parents. What has emerged from these conversations is that while everyone’s experiences under pressure are unique, pressure follows patterns and develops in predictable ways. If we can recognize the patterns, we can improve our ability to sidestep the biological traps that can sabotage us—and use the energy that accompanies pressure to thrive. The Power of Pressure combines the insights gathered from Jensen’s work with the latest research in biology and neuroscience to help you understand and use the “pressure equation” of importance, uncertainty and volume escape the traps of pressure with effective tools and tactics be ambidextrous so that you can handle pressure both in peak pressure moments and over the long haul reduce tension, sleep better and have more energy so that you can meet challenges head-on recognize pressure moments so that you can prepare for when you will likely the feel the heat leverage strategies so that you can give everything you’ve got when it’s most important And more! How we navigate our highest-pressure moments has a huge impact on the overall trajectory of our lives, both in terms of how successful we are and how much we enjoy the journey along the way.

Recently, it was reported that nanostructured materials processed under high pressure by HPT and ECAP have an extraordinary combination of both high strength and high ductility, which are two desirable, but rarely co-existing properties. These findings indicate that high-pressure is a critical factor that can be employed to process nanostructured materials with superior mechanical, and possibly also physical, properties. It is the objective of this workshop to review our current knowledge, identify issues for future research, and discuss future directions on the processing and properties of nanostructured materials via SPD techniques, with a special emphasis on high-pressure effects. The 42 peer-reviewed papers in this book cover areas of high pressure effect on the nanostructure and properties of SPD-processed materials, fundamentals of nanostructured materials, development of high-pressure SPD technologies for commercializations, recent advances of SPD technologies as well as applications and future markets of SPD-processed nanostructured materials.

Since the last edition of this book, big changes have occurred in our understanding of high blood pressure and its treatment. The categories of high blood pressure have been reduced, and our recommendations about early treatment have changed as well. New drugs are available and old ones are off the market. A major Medicare drug plan, Part D, has confused millions of elderly Americans and changed how they pay for their drugs, including those for high blood pressure. These changes alone are more than enough justification for a new edition of High Blood Pressure For Dummies. This edition has more emphasis on prevention. I also include new discoveries and myths about high blood pressure, so if you already have the first edition, know that I've packed this one with new stuff. (At the very least, buy it for your spouse - then borrow it so you stay up to date!). But the main reason I wanted to write this update comes from an article that appears in the January 2007 issue of the journal Diabetes Care. The article points out that ''despite the publication of increasingly aggressive guidelines for lowering blood pressure, [high blood pressure] remains substantially unimproved among diabetic patients.'' In other words, the number of people with diabetes is increasing explosively, but they're not achieving the level of blood pressure control that will prevent heart attacks, strokes, and amputations. . I hope to change this outcome by helping the even larger population without diabetes to control their blood pressure. ----Alan L. Rubin, MD

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An urgently needed guide to the alarming increase in anxiety and stress experienced by girls from elementary school through college, from the author of Untangled “An invaluable read for anyone who has girls, works with girls, or cares about girls—for everyone!”—Claire Shipman, author of The Confidence Code and The Confidence Code for Girls Though anxiety has risen among young people overall, studies confirm that it has skyrocketed in girls. Research finds that the number of girls who said that they often felt nervous, worried, or fearful jumped 55 percent from 2009 to 2014, while the comparable number for adolescent boys has remained unchanged. As a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with girls, Lisa Damour, Ph.D., has witnessed this rising tide of stress and anxiety in her own research, in private practice, and in the all-girls’ school where she consults. She knew this had to be the topic of her new book. In the engaging, anecdotal style and reassuring tone that won over thousands of readers of her first book, Untangled, Damour starts by addressing the facts about psychological pressure. She explains the surprising and underappreciated value of stress and anxiety: that stress can helpfully stretch us beyond our comfort zones, and anxiety can play a key role in keeping girls safe. When we emphasize the benefits of stress and anxiety, we can help our daughters take them in stride. But no parents want their daughter to suffer from emotional overload, so Damour then turns to the many facets of girls’ lives where tension takes hold: their interactions at home, pressures at school, social anxiety among other girls and among boys, and their lives online. As readers move through the layers of girls’ lives, they’ll learn about the critical steps that adults can take to shield their daughters from the toxic pressures to which our culture—including we, as parents—subjects girls. Readers who know Damour from Untangled or the New York Times, or from her regular appearances on CBS News, will be drawn to this important new contribution to understanding and supporting today’s girls. Praise for Under Pressure “Truly a must-read for parents, teachers, coaches, and mentors wanting to help girls along the path to adulthood.”—Julie Lythcott-Haims, New York Times bestselling author of How to Raise an Adult

A little bit more than two years after the first edition, we are pleased to publish the second edition of this book. More than half of the chapters have been remodeled and completed as the result of technical improvements and recently acquired clinical data. During these two years, the number of coronary pressure measurements performed worldwide both during diagnostic and interventional procedures has increased almost exponentially. Most of the initial problems associated with this new approach have been overcome. Many colleagues have explored new research avenues and in many catheterization laboratories the method has matured from a research toy to a clinical tool. Classical indications such as the intermediate stenosis and guidance of PTCA or stent implantation, have been largely extended and coronary pressure measurement has proven to be useful in multi vessel disease, diffuse disease, long and serial stenosis, after myocardial infarction, and in many other diagnostic and interventional situations encountered in the catheterization laboratory. Quite unexpectedly, this approach has also enforced the ties with our surgical colleagues in the selection of patients suitable for minimal invasive surgery or hybride revascularization. Also in mild and intermediate left main disease, there is a role for coronary pressure measurement in the process of decision making. We would like to express our gratitude to all those many colleagues who trusted and applied this new approach for the benefit of their patients. Aalst, Eindhoven, Bernard De Bruyne. Nico H. J. Pijls. High pressure has become a basic variable in many areas of science and engineering. It extends from disciplines of geophysics and astrophysics through chemistry and physics to those of modern biology, electrical and chemical engineering. This breadth has been recognized for some time, but it was not until the early 1960's that an international group of scientists and engineers established the Association Internationale for Research and Advancement of High Pressure Science and Technology (AIRAPT) for bringing these various aspects of high pressure together at an international conference. The First AIRAPT International High Pressure Conference was held in 1965 in France and has been convened at approximately two to three year intervals since that time. The past four AIRAPT International High Pressure Conferences have been held in Germany, Scotland, Japan and the U.S.S.R. Since the first meeting of this kind, our understanding of high pressure behavior of physical systems has increased greatly.

Hypertension remains a leading cause of disability and death worldwide. Self-monitoring of blood pressure by patients at home is currently recommended as a valuable tool for the diagnosis and management of hypertension. Unfortunately, in clinical practice, home blood pressure monitoring is often inadequately implemented, mostly due to the use of inaccurate devices and inappropriate methodologies. Thus, the potential of the method to improve the management of hypertension and cardiovascular disease prevention has not yet been exhausted. This volume presents the available evidence on home blood pressure monitoring, discusses its strengths and limitations, and presents strategies for its optimal implementation in clinical practice. Written by distinguished international experts, it offers a complete source of information and guide for practitioners and researchers dealing with the management of hypertension.

Description :

A cohort of 1056 normotensive, healthy, young men initially examined in 1940 at the mean age of 24 years was followed at three periodic intervals until 1964. The cohort demonstrated little change in mean systolic blood pressure beyond age 35; a portion of this cohort showed no rise of systolic blood pressure with age. If the men are classified according to systolic blood pressure in 1940, those men in the upper quintile tend to remain high; when classified by quintile in 1951, those men at the extremes maintained their relative position for the period of the study. Predictive utility of a systolic blood pressure may be a function of its actual level as well as the age of the individual. Two factors further influenced the systolic blood pressure of this cohort, namely parental longevity and weight gain independent of arm circumference. The effect of those factors separately and in combination changed as the cohort grew older. (Author).
