ABOUT THE BOOK “By 2050 the development gulf will no longer be between a rich billion in the most developed countries and five billion in the developing countries; rather, it will be between the trapped billion and the rest of humankind.” Written in 2007, Paul Collier’s, The Bottom Billion: Why the Poorest Countries are Failing and What Can Be Done About It, was widely hailed as a landmark work in the field of development economics. Intended in Collier’s own words as a book on economics that could be read on the beach (Collier, TED Talk), The Bottom Billion uses relatively simple descriptive prose to challenge traditional perspectives on the state of global poverty and what can be done about it. Based on years of statistical research, the Bottom Billion examines why some people and places in the world are seemingly stuck in poverty while the majority of ‘developing nations’ are rapidly becoming more affluent. Collier proposes several methods for helping the most impoverished nations to become ‘unstuck’. He emphasized four main ‘development traps’ that have often been overlooked in aid, economic, and foreign policy circles; notably, Collier questions current norms in provision of international aid to the poorest countries, suggesting strategic use of aid and asserting that more is not necessarily better. MEET THE AUTHOR Zeya is a native of the San Francisco Bay Area. After earning a BA in Modern Literature at the University of California at Santa Cruz, Zeya began building a career in International Development work that allowed him to live and travel extensively in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. In 2011 he completed an MA in International Development from Oxford Brookes University in Oxford, England. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Collier estimates four of the five billion once stuck in poverty are now achieving greater levels of affluence and mobility. However, he argues the last billion—the bottom billion—are being left far behind. Not only is this demographic failing to achieve strong economic progress, says Collier, but in many cases it is regressing to a quality of existence more characteristic of the fourteenth century than the twenty-first. For fear of stigmatization, Collier declines to list the countries where the bottom billion live. He does comment the majority of those living in the most abject conditions are located within a group of some 58 states, mostly in Africa and Central Asia. Over the last several decades, four fifths of the world’s poor have made substantial gains towards a middle class lifestyle. Still, the average person in these bottom billion countries is now poorer than in 1970 and are statistically more susceptible to war and violent conflict, disease, environmental hazards, and corrupt governance. Many of the problems shared by these people are exacerbated by a lack of health care, education and other vital infrastructure... Buy a copy to keep reading!

Description :

The Bible tells us that death and life are in the power of tongue and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof (Proverbs 18:21). We are further told that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment; for by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned (Matthew 12:36 & 37). Most of the difficult problems or situations we are experiencing today are as a result of our negative thoughts and confessions of our mouths. Hear what the Bible has to say about this: The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips (Proverbs 16:13). The battle of the mind is the greatest battle you have to fight, and it is a battle you have to win; for if you lose this battle, you lose everything. Therefore, at all times, you must come against negative thoughts that contradict the word of God, as well as the great things that you desire in your heart. Not only can the wrong thoughts entertained in your mind cause your prayers to be ineffective, it can also cause you to sin against God. The state of your mind can determine whether you are going to heaven or hell fire. Remember, God judges by the heart. In essence, the kind of information you process in your mind and the confeesion of your mouth will determine your destiny. Author: Evangelist K. Emmanuella Olaribigbe is a dynamic woman of God who has embraced her assignment to pursue, proclaim, and publish the word of God, to help people achieve their dreams and goals. Evangelist Olaribigbe is a nurse by profession, and has several hobbies, which include reading, writing, socializing, and worshipping God.

Description :

Historically, evolution moves at a slow place, with advances made by incremental steps. Occasionally, however, when circumstances permit, a massive leap catapults a species into a different future. Now, ten thousand years into such a future, humanity has evolved into a barely recognizable form, with the ability to manifest multiple personal entitieseach with a distinctly different physical identity. The Exiger hegemony has exploited this evolutionary springboard, giving it virtually irresistible military, political, and even social advantage as it seeks the utter subjugation of the galaxy. Commander Solon Draco lost his parents at ten, and that experience shaped his entire future. As an adult, he dedicates his life to the military. For his own reasons, he chooses to display only one personality, a single-minded drive that has propelled him through the ranks. When Draco learns that the bearer of the genetic leap that founded his race and the Exiger Empire thousands of years ago has discovered a means to eliminate the change, he is dispatched into the past, leading an interstellar battle fleet from an even more distant future to foil this plan. He knows that if this crucial change is eliminated, he, his whole race, and the future they populate will vanish in an instant. As adversaries who are millennia apart race against time on a mission that will carry them to the very end of time, everything hangs in the balance. What path will humanity tread into the unknown future?
