Description :

Examining the relationship between strangers, embodiment and community, Strange Encounters challenges the assumptions that the stranger is simply anybody we do not recognize and instead proposes that he or she is socially constructued as somebody we already know. Using feminist and postcolonial theory this book examines the impact of multiculturalism and globalization on embodiment and community whilst considering the ethical and political implication of its critique for post-colonial feminism. A diverse range of texts are analyzed which produce the figure of 'the stranger', showing that it has alternatively been expelled as the origin of danger - such as in neighbourhood watch, or celebrated as the origin of difference - as in multiculturalism. The author argues that both of these standpoints are problematic as they involve 'stranger fetishism'; they assume that the stranger 'has a life of its own'.

Fiction. The odd, illuminating moment that arises from a strange encounter is a trope in short fiction that seldom gets shopworn. Unlikely collisions both in terms of plot and character give energy and illumination to the fifteen stories collected in STANGE ENCOUNTER: SHORT STORIES. These stories are unique in their abilities to shine a light on the strange, odd, and fantastic until we are left thinking, "Isn't life extraordinary?" Eleanor Lerman's "Persistent Views of the Unknown" opens the collection with a story of paranormal encounter. "The Dead Writers Reading Series" by Nathan Oates throws us into a world where long-dead authors show-up to read their work. "Tooth" by Tsung-yan Kwong tells the tale of i, or Tooth, an urban legend of North Korean prison camps who used ventriloquism and contortionism to spook gulag warders and give hope to prisoners. More grounded in reality but nevertheless fantastic is Peter Gordon's "Elizabeth," the story of a modest wedding in a Boston hotel and the young newlywed's chance encounter with Elizabeth Taylor. Bradley Bazzle's "Relatable Influence" gives us a behind-the-scenes look at a mom blogger whose editor asks her to work with a famous but unusual photographer to enhance her image and advance her work to a higher level of social influence. The collection's concluding piece "Singapore" by Lisa Taddeo is a chilling account of a young mother and her toddler daughter who are abducted knife-point by a man who intends to rape and kill them both. "Singapore" --and all of the fifteen stories collected here --speak to the strangeness and unpredictability of life.

Like 15 "X-Files" rolled into one, Strange Encounters by ufologist and journalist, Curt Sutherly, shares gripping stories that run the gamut from monster sightings to UFO cover-ups. Strange Encounters confronts the unknown head-on, probing some of the inexplicable mysteries that will intrigue you, haunt you, and even frighten you. The remarkable yet true events documented here indicate a striking pattern of strange occurrences you will not be able to dismiss—or forget. ·Why do probes to Mars vanish? Is there some "great galactic ghoul" that devours them? ·Before the Russian "Fobos 2" probe stopped functioning, it showed a massive system for heat generation, an invisible object which cast a shadow, and an object in space that cannot be identified. What is the meaning of all these discoveries? ·What is the truth about the MJ-12 documents that purportedly reveal that the government knows much more about UFO's than it admits? ·What is the nature of the "phantom panther" that is seen all over the U.S. East Coast? ·What happened to the "mothman," a strange, human-sized creature with bat-like wings that terrorized West Virginia? ·What are the secrets of the Abominable Snowman? ·What is the truth about the Bermuda Triangle? ·What are the real beginnings of the UFO controversy? Strange Encounters is one of the most exciting books covering important events from the world of the strange and paranormal over the past 50 years. Rather than tell you what to believe, it gives you information from all sides of each strange event and lets you decide for yourself. Strange Encounters is a book you must have.

In 1956, in the Brazilian state of Rondônia, a group of Wari’ Indians had their first peaceful contact with whites: Protestant missionaries and officers from the national Indian Protection Service. On returning to their villages, the Wari’ announced, “We touched their bodies!” Meanwhile the whites reported to their own people that “the region’s most warlike tribe has entered the pacification phase!” Initially published in Brazil, Strange Enemies is an ethnographic narrative of the first encounters between these peoples with radically different worldviews. During the 1940s and 1950s, white rubber tappers invading the Wari’ lands raided the native villages, shooting and killing their victims as they slept. These massacres prompted the Wari’ to initiate a period of intense retaliatory warfare. The national government and religious organizations subsequently intervened, seeking to “pacify” the Indians. Aparecida Vilaça was able to interview both Wari’ and non-Wari’ participants in these encounters, and here she shares their firsthand narratives of the dramatic events. Taking the Wari’ perspective as its starting point, Strange Enemies combines a detailed examination of these cross-cultural encounters with analyses of classic ethnological themes such as kinship, shamanism, cannibalism, warfare, and mythology.

Arabella is the only daughter of Baron Arthur Leon Wellington, and she is the heir of the Wellington dynasty. Her mother, the baroness, died giving birth to her, and the baron still mourns for his late wife, going on eleven years. So to deal with the loss of his wife, the baron keeps busy ten months out of a year, living in other lands, promoting and selling his commercial enterprises, textile and livestock from his estate, and among other business enterprises in other kingdoms. The baron realizes that his time is running out to salvage his dwindling relationship with his daughter, whom he leaves in the care of her governess and the head housekeeper of his castle. The baron’s daughter, Arabella, will turn eleven years old this year, and little does she know that for every fifth generation of the Wellington heirs, a huge mysterious, glittery white tree appears on the Wellington Castle grounds among the tall trees next to the castle. When a Wellington baronesses every five generations dies giving birth to a girl, the mysterious, glittery white tree appears shortly after the girls turn eleven years old. Today is Arabella’s eleventh birthday, and soon the mysterious tree will appear on the castle grounds. The reason the mysterious, glittery white tree appears is explained by her fifth-generation ancestor, who sends her a scroll in a small golden box that is under the mysterious, glittery white tree. No one can see this mysterious tree but Arabella, and the Wellington girls to whom the mysterious tree appeared after they turned eleven years old, the ones who lost their mothers, the baronesses, after giving birth to them. The ancestor, a female who also lost her mother, the baroness, after giving birth to her, is Arabella’s fifth-generation great-grandmother, Baroness Mary Ann Wellington Armstrong. In the scroll she sends to her, the ancestor tells Arabella she is destined to go on four separate journeys, goodwill missions, that she also went to after turning eleven years old, to help an oppressed people who are waiting for the stranger to arrive. This has been foretold, and she will rescue them from their dire situation. But at the same time, Arabella, as her ancestors, the baronesses, before her, will have the greatest adventures in her lifetime and will have lasting memories of people she will grow to love on each of her journeys and, through the trials and perils she goes though in each journey she undertakes, will make her strong in faith. She will also gain values that will benefit her and others for the rest of her life. Also, according to Arabella’s ancestor’s handwritten scroll, no one in the castle will know that she is gone, because each journey will last a moment there at the Wellington Castle; however, each journey Arabella goes on, while she is in the distant lands, will last up to eleven months. It was the same for the other Wellington girls the mysterious tree appeared to after they turned eleven years old, the ones who lost their mothers, the baronesses, during childbirth. When Arabella realizes she has the opportunity of a lifetime to see great, fantastic adventures on her journeys and goodwill missions to help others in need, she decides it beats sitting in the old castle, waiting for her father to get over her mother’s death and return to her at the Wellington Castle more permanently as she is growing up, because she wants her father to be with her. She is indeed looking forward to her four journeys, and her first journey is about to begin.
