"The Cask of Amontillado" (sometimes spelled "The Casque of Amontillado") is a short story, written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book. The story is set in a nameless Italian city in an unspecified year (possibly sometime during the eighteenth century) and concerns the deadly revenge taken by the narrator on a friend who he claims has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive – in this case, by immurement.

Revenge turns deadly when the narrator, Montressor, buries his friend, Fortunato, alive as the result of a perceived insult. Like “The Black Cat” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Cask of Amontillado” is remarkable for being conveyed from the murderer’s perspective. A pioneer of the short story genre, Poe’s stories typically captured themes of the macabre and included elements of the mysterious. His better-known stories include “The Fall of the House of Usher”, “The Pit and the Pendulum”, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”. HarperCollins brings great works of literature to life in digital format, upholding the highest standards in ebook production and celebrating reading in all its forms. "The Cask of Amontillado" is one of Edgar Allan Poe's most enduring works. This is a collection of his greatest tales of grime and darkness, with his poem, "The Raven," included as a bonus. Naturally, there is debate about which of Poe's stories are really his greatest ones, with much having to do with one's personal preference. Still, the fifteen included in this edition are undoubtedly strong contenders for the distinction. Included short stories in this volume: "The "Tell-Tale Heart," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Black Cat," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," "The Purloined Letter," "Ms. Found in a Bottle," "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar," "The Premature Burial," "The Masque of Red Death," "The Balloon Hoax," "William Wilson," "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether," and last but not least, "Hop Frog."

Description :

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe The narrator starts by telling us that Fortunato has hurt him. Worse yet, Fortunato despises him. The narrator takes revenge. He meets Fortunato, where everyone is dressed in clown clothes for the festivities - and already very drunk. The speaker said he found a rare brandy barrel called Amontillado Fortunato expressed great interest in verifying the authenticity of the wine. So he and the narrator went to the catacombs, or "tombs" of the Montrezor family. Apparently, that's where the narrator keeps his wine. The narrator leads Fortunato deep in the grave, making him drunk and drunk all the way. Fortunato is constantly coughing, and the narrator is constantly suggesting that Fortunato is sick. Too much to go down in a damp cellar and should go back to Fortunato, talking about Amontillado. Fortunato finally entered a human-sized hole that was part of the really nasty basement wall. The narrator chains the Fortunato to the wall, and then begins to close the Fortunato in the pit, filling a hole with bricks. When he had one brick left, he was mentally torturing Fortunato until he asked for mercy - and we finally got to know the narrator Fortunato called him. "Montresser" After Fortunato sang Montresor, he had no more words to say, but before Montresor laid the last brick, Fortunato rang his bell, Montresor finished the job and let him die there. At the end, Montresor told us the story. It all happened fifty years ago and nobody knows.

Description :

The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitely settled—but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved, precluded the idea of risk. I must not only punish, but punish with impunity. A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong. It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will. I continued, as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.

Description :

No American author of the early 19th century enjoys a larger international audience than Edgar Allan Poe. Widely translated, read, and studied, he occupies an iconic place in global culture. Such acclaim would have gratified Poe, who deliberately wrote for "the world at large" and mocked the provincialism of strictly nationalistic themes. Partly for this reason, early literary historians cast Poe as an outsider, regarding his dark fantasies as extraneous to American life and experience. Only in the 20th century did Poe finally gain a prominent place in the national canon. Changing critical approaches have deepened our understanding of Poe's complexity and revealed an author who defies easy classification. New models of interpretation have excited fresh debates about his essential genius, his subversive imagination, his cultural insight, and his ultimate impact, urging an expansive reconsideration of his literary achievement. Edited by leading experts J. Gerald Kennedy and Scott Peeples, this volume presents a sweeping reexamination of Poe's work. Forty-five distinguished scholars address Poe's troubled life and checkered career as a "magazinist," his poetry and prose, and his reviews, essays, opinions, and marginalia. The chapters provide fresh insights into Poe's lasting impact on subsequent literature, music, art, comics, and film and illuminate his radical conception of the universe, science, and the human mind. Wide-ranging and thought-provoking, this Handbook reveals a thoroughly modern Poe, whose timeless fables of peril and loss will continue to attract new generations of readers and scholars.
