Holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) forests and woodlands have been considered as a paradigm for Mediterranean terrestrial ecosystems. In the western part of the Mediterranean Basin, these forests and woodlands occupy large areas and thus play a very important role in the landscape. A number of research projects from the Centre d'Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (CEFE), the Centre de Recerca Ecológica i Aplicacions Forestals (CREAF), and from many other laboratories are currently focusing on Q. ilex ecosystems, and a number of problems have appeared concerning not only basic knowledge but also management aspects. For this reason, the CEFE and the CREAF decided to jointly organize the workshop on Quercus ilex L. Ecosystems, which was held in Montpellier and Barcelona in September 1990. The present volume consists of a selection of papers presented during the workshop and other papers contributed after the workshop. The papers are divided into five sections: Biogeography and History; Structure, Productivity and Dynamics; Water Relationships; Nutrient Cycling; and Management.

Written by leading experts in the field of business, finance, law and economics, this edited volume brings together the latest thoughts and developments on turnaround management and business rescue from an academic, judiciary and turnaround/insolvency practitioner perspective. Turnaround Management and Bankruptcy presents different viewpoints on turnarounds and business rescue in Europe. Presenting a state-of-the-art review of failure research in finance, such as on bankruptcy prediction, causes of decline, or distressed asset valuation. It also presents the latest insights from turnaround management research as well as giving a contemporary insight into law debates on insolvency legislation reform, cross-border judicial issues, bankruptcy decision-making by judges and competition policy in distressed economies. Finally, the book provides a regional and sector perspective on how the current crisis affects Europe, its government policies and industry performance. In this way, the volume presents a modern, interdisciplinary and scholarly overview of the latest insights, issues and debates in turnaround management and business rescue, developing a European perspective in an attempt to redress the predominance of an American orientation in the academic literature. It aims at a wider audience interested in turnarounds and failure, such as faculty and students in the fields of law, business, economics, accountancy, finance, strategic management, and marketing, but also at judges, insolvency practitioners, lawyers, accountants and turnaround professionals, as well as the EU and government officials, staff of trade unions and employer’s associations.

Description :

The attainment of democracy in 1994 presented government with twin challenges: significant institutional transformation and at the same time introducing new policies in line with the democratic Constitution. Secondly the Government had to deal with the legacy of Apartheid within South Africa, whilst at the same time facing new challenges of integrating the country in a rapidly changing global environment. Since 1994, the State has deliberately set out systematically and deliberately to dismantle Apartheid social relations and create a democratic society based on the principle of equity, non-racialism and non-sexism. The Towards a Ten Year Review was overseen by a steering group of Ministers and received inputs from individual departments in government. The project outputs were reviewed by the Directors-general (DG) clusters. The Review is organised on comprehensive research conducted within and outside of government, and attempts to evaluate the extent to which government has achieved its objectives in the past decade. More modestly, it explores the possible policy permutations for the next decade in the context of the imperatives of the Constitution and the challenges of reconstruction and development.

The author has had practical line experience with two major industrial firms, and his suggestions for improving inventory, manufacturing, marketing, finance, and technology are down to earth and practical. Management Accounting This no-nonsense book, written by a working expert in the field, focuses attention on the most crucial elements of a successful turnaround and the methods that can be used to identify and solve problems quickly. Finkin offers a practical working approach which slices away the usual theoretical abstractions. He clearly details the approaches and actions needed to achieve a successful turnaround for all major functional areas. Communication and its importance in developing commitment to the turnaround, as well as the roles played by government, organized labor, and the media in assisting or impeding the turnaround process are given Finkin's considered scrutiny. The reader is effectively guided step-by-step through the turnaround process and is given the understanding needed to judge the ability of the players and the appropriateness of their tactics.

The struggle to integrate the Baltimore Orioles mirrored the fight for civil rights in Baltimore. The Orioles debuted in 1954, the same year the Supreme Court struck down public school segregation. As Baltimore experienced demonstrations, white flight and a 1968 riot, team integration came slowly. Black players—mostly outfielders—made cameo appearances as black fans stayed away in droves. The breakthrough came in 1966, with the arrival of a more enlightened owner, and African American superstar Frank Robinson. As more black players filled the roster, the Orioles dominated the American League from 1969 through much of the 1970s and into the early 1980s. Attempts to integrate the team’s executive suite were less successful. While black players generally did not participate in civil rights actions, several under Robinson’s leadership pushed for front office jobs for former black players. Drawing on primary sources and interviews with former executives, players and sportswriters, this book tells the story of the integration of the Orioles. The author describes how tensions between community leaders and team officials aborted negotiations to both increase black attendance and put an African American in the club’s executive ranks.

What Explains the Recent Tremendous Growth in Private Equity Funds? How Have These Funds Created so Much Value? Can We Expect This Kind of Growth in Other Countries and Other Types of Investments? The pool of U.S. private equity funds has grown from $5 billion in 1980 to over $175 billion in 1999. Private equity's recent growth has outstripped that of almost every class of financial product. It presents a collection of real world cases-supplemented by detailed industry notes-that explore the exciting and dynamic world of venture capital and buyout funds. The organization mirrors that of the venture capital/private equity process itself: * The first part explores the raising and structuring of private equity funds, as well as the perspective of investors. * The second part explores the selection, oversight, and adding value to firms-the 'heart' of the private equity cycle. * The third part describes how private equity groups reap attractive returns from successful investments. * The final section explores the emerging efforts to translate the private equity model into other settings, such as corporate venturing programs.
