This dissertation sheds light on the governance challenges arising in the family office as a result of its intermediary position between an affluent family and its assets. The three dissertation papers enhance theoretical and empirical understanding of agency theory on family firms and shed light on the family office as a secretive type of family business. The first paper theoretically advances unique types of agency costs, i.e. family blockholder, double agency as well as organizational costs in single and embedded family offices. The study proposes a framework of agency cost effectiveness and conceptualizes boundary conditions that affect the cost-advantageousness of both elaborated family office types. On the basis of four German and Swiss single family offices with the family principal and family external family officer as units of analysis, I advance the theoretical research efforts of the first paper with a multi-case research design and identify behavioral as well as contextual factors that affect the emergence of family blockholder and double agency costs. The third paper switches perspective to the necessity of granting pay incentives to family agents in the light of existing family firm-specific agency costs. Based on five single family office cases from Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein with again, family principals as well as family internal family officers as my units of analysis, I reveal determinants of incentive structures for family agents, i.e. socio-cultural and financial factors, as well as the business context. Altogether my dissertation significantly extends agency theoretical perspectives on family businesses and contributes to reconciling disparate research on agency threats and costs.

Studies abound investigating whether agency or stewardship theory is more applicable within family firms. Both theories predict enhanced firm performance, but starkly contrast in behavioral assumptions and structural prescriptions. Agency theory assumes an economic model of man; agent behavior is based on self-interest and may conflict with the principal's interest. Governance structures that control and monitor agents are prescribed to thwart opportunistic behavior and better align the goals of the principal and agent. Stewardship theory assumes a humanistic model of man; steward behavior is based on serving others and therefore will align with the principal's interest. Governance structures that empower stewards are prescribed to facilitate the continued alignment of interests. Investigations reveal that either theory can be applicable in the unique context of family firms, thereby creating ambiguous and confounding predictions about behavior and performance. I address this theoretical and empirical debate by reviewing and synthesizing the family firm literature grounded in these theories. I then conduct an empirical study to narrow the distance between these opposing theoretical perspectives. My research investigates the integration of agency and stewardship theories on family firm behavior and performance. My research model intertwines components of agency and stewardship perspectives, making predictions within, across, and in the integration of theories. Primary data collected from family firm leaders, family employees, and nonfamily employees were analyzed in matched triads representing 77 family firms. Results support the majority of predictions made. Contributions to family firm literature, theory, and practice are discussed.

Until recently, research in family business has been confined to a sub-group of entrepreneurship scholars, labor economists, and sociologists. Family business employment is often the only economic option available to migrants, the first entrepreneurial experience for young people, and a source of an economy's new business creation activities. These issues are typically framed in terms of the generational transfer of wealth, management succession, or the interplay between the economic system of a family and its sociopolitical system. The phenomenon is clearly widespread but for some reason continues to be poorly understood. We believe that progress on the empirical front has been hampered by a lack of accepted theoretical frameworks. For example, attempts to employ agency theory, geographic agglomeration and spill overs, social networks, sense making, bargaining and other frameworks have been scattered. In our view, the extant research has not created the theoretic ballast that can withstand repeated empirical verification. More fundamentally, researchers are beginning to ask, "Is family business theoretically distinctive or a convenient phenomenon for exploiting familiar theories with new data?" We believe the time is ripe for a focused look at the theoretical history and prospects of family business research. Review articles grounded in economics, sociology, psychology and political economy and that offer multidisciplinary implications are especially sought. Theory based empirical papers are also welcomed. We believe that there are exciting opportunities for theory development and so encourage authors to focus on this in their submissions.
