Can I Be Forgiven? In an out-of-the-way cemetery an unmarked tombstone bears the single word, Forgiven. A person can't help wondering, who was forgiven and by whom? What happened that caused someone to leave that message forever engraved upon his tombstone? The secret of that tombstone has long been buried. But one thing is certain, the need for forgiveness will always exist, since we all fail to live up to our word and others' expectations of us at one time or another. What is more serious is that we have failed to live up to what God expects of us! No one is able to perfectly keep God's commandments. The Bible states it simply, "all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). "Your iniquities [sins] have made a separation between you and your God" (Isaiah 59:2). Our disobedience separates us from our Creator. We need his forgiveness. But how can we know that God will forgive us? How could a perfectly just and righteous God overlook our sin? Our situation would be impossible if God had not settled the issue himself. He sent his Son--Jesus Christ--to earth to become a man, live a perfectly sinless life, and ultimately give his life for you and me. On the cross where Jesus died, he took the punishment for sin that we deserved. The Bible says God made Jesus to be sin for us, the One "who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Then Jesus rose from the tomb and came back to life three days later and was seen by hundreds of people (1 Corinthians 15:3-6). Can I Be Sure? Because of what Jesus has accomplished, it is possible to know that God will forgive you and one day receive you into heaven (John 14:1-3). You can have the assurance of God's forgiveness by making the following choices: Recognize that your sins have separated you from God. In honest repentance agree with God about your sinfulness and admit your need for forgiveness: "If we confess our sins, he [God] is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Realize that God loves you, and believe that the sinless Jesus Christ died for your sins--taking the punishment you deserve: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16). In response to your trust, God promises you eternity with him! Receive Jesus Christ into your life by faith as your Savior from sin's consequences. When you respond to God's offer of forgiveness in faith, you can know that he has forgiven you. God's Book, the Bible, promises that "to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God" (John 1:12). If that is your heart's desire, right where you are you can pray something like this: Dear God, I know that I have sinned against many people and against you. I need your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus Christ died for me and arose from the dead. I invite him into my life to be my Savior. Thank you for your gift of forgiveness and eternal life. Are you forgiven?

Winner of the 2013 Women's Prize for Fiction—A darkly comic novel of twenty-first-century domestic life by a writer who is always “compelling, devastating, and furiously good” (Zadie Smith) Harold Silver has spent a lifetime watching his younger brother, George, a taller, smarter, and more successful high-flying TV executive, acquire a covetable wife, two kids, and a beautiful home in the suburbs of New York City. But Harry, a historian and Nixon scholar, also knows George has a murderous temper, and when George loses control the result is an act of violence so shocking that both brothers are hurled into entirely new lives in which they both must seek absolution. Harry finds himself suddenly playing parent to his brother’s two adolescent children, tumbling down the rabbit hole of Internet sex, dealing with aging parents who move through time like travelers on a fantastic voyage. As Harry builds a twenty-first-century family created by choice rather than biology, we become all the more aware of the ways in which our history, both personal and political, can become our destiny and either compel us to repeat our errors or be the catalyst for change. May We Be Forgiven is an unnerving, funny tale of unexpected intimacies and of how one deeply fractured family might begin to put itself back together.

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER When the Second World War broke out, Ralph MacLean chose to escape his troubled life on the Magdalen Islands in eastern Canada and volunteer to serve his country overseas. Meanwhile, in Vancouver, Mitsue Sakamoto saw her family and her stable community torn apart after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Like many young Canadian soldiers, Ralph was captured by the Japanese army. He would spend the war in prison camps, enduring pestilence, beatings and starvation, as well as a journey by hell ship to Japan to perform slave labour, while around him his friends and countrymen perished. Back in Canada, Mitsue and her family were expelled from their home by the government and forced to spend years eking out an existence in rural Alberta, working other people's land for a dollar a day. By the end of the war, Ralph emerged broken but a survivor. Mitsue, worn down by years of back-breaking labour, had to start all over again in Medicine Hat, Alberta. A generation later, at a high school dance, Ralph's daughter and Mitsue's son fell in love. Although the war toyed with Ralph's and Mitsue's lives and threatened to erase their humanity, these two brave individuals somehow surmounted enormous transgressions and learned to forgive. Without this forgiveness, their grandson Mark Sakamoto would never have come to be.

Do you have doubts about God? Do you think He has stopped working in our lives in this modern world? Do you believe He stopped caring after the Bible was assembled? Well... He did not. He continues to interact with humans today. Meet Dawn. She was raised upon solid Christian values, but for many years she ignored God's signs in her life. She played hard, made poor choices and found herself in quite a few scrapes. Luckily, God did not abandon her. When she finally had enough dark days, she went in search of Him. She was rewarded, just as the Bible says, when He gave her a wondrous gift - the gift of His presence, along with a grace message for modern day spiritual warriors. This is one woman's testimony of stubbornness, until God delivered her a much-needed message of hope.
